Solubilization of cyclosporin A

Abstract: This study investigated the solubilization of cyclosporin A (CsA), a neutral undecapeptide, by cosolvency, micellization, and complexation. Cosolvents (ethanol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol polyethyleneglycol ether, and glycerin), surfactants (polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate [(Tween 80)], polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate [(Tween 20)], and Cremophor EL), and cyclodextrins (alpha-cyclodextrin [(alphaCD)] and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin[(HPbetaCD)] were used as sol… Show more

“…The use of cosolvents has been employed by a number of workers [7][8][9] to enhance the solubility of poorly soluble drugs. Some attempts have been made to increase the solubility of nimesulide and meloxicam [10][11][12][13] by using techniques other than the use of cosolvents.…”

“…The solubility figures (Fig 5-10) showed the exponential increase in the solubility of drugs with increasing concentration of cosolvents [14][15][16][17][18] . By disrupting water's self-association, cosolvents reduce water's ability to squeeze out non-polar, hydrophobic compounds, thus increasing solubility.…”
