Solubility of starch and microcrystalline cellulose in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid and solution rheological properties

Abstract: This study compared the solubility of starch (G50) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in an ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][OAc]), at different temperatures. From SAXS and WAXS analysis, polysaccharides could be totally dissolved in [Emim][OAc]. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra showed a similar dissolution mechanism for starch and MCC, which was related to the formation of hydrogen bonds between polysaccharide hydroxyls and acetic anions, causing the breakage of the hy… Show more

“…The crystallites of MCC could be completely damaged during dissolution, which was caused by the cleavage of the inter-and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds in MCC [16]. Then, by regeneration, the molecular chains of cellulose rearranged and reconstituted into an aggregated structure.…”

“…Moreover, the absorption peaks at 1376 cm -1 and 1561 cm -1 (associated with symmetric and asymmetric acetate group) are characteristic of [C2mim]OAc. They are shifted, also suggesting that the interactions between [C2mim]OAc and DMC become strong [44]. The hydroxyl-functionalized polytriazole itself plays an important role in the cosolvency for the ternary system investigated here.…”

“…In this work, 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][OAc]) was used as a solvent of a high‐amylose starch considering its excellent dissolution capability . Native G50 starch was firstly dissolved in [Emim][OAc].…”
