Solubility Increment and Thermodynamic Analysis of Bioactive Antofloxacin Hydrochloride in Aqueous ChCl/PTS Deep Eutectic Solvent and Cosolvent Mixtures

Abstract: The solubility of antofloxacin hydrochloride in deep eutectic solvent (DES) aqueous solutions between choline chloride (ChCl) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTS), (ethanol + water), and (ethanol + acetonitrile) cosolvent mixtures were investigated by means of the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method at 273.15− 318.15 K under pressure condition of 101.3 kPa. Experimental solubility was strongly increased more than about 560-fold in aqueous ChCl/PTS system with the increasing temperature and mass fraction of D… Show more

“…These donors include urea, amide, carboxylic acid, and polyol. Receptors include quaternary ammonium salts and zwitterions. , With the increasing demand for green solvents, DESs have received widespread attention in the fields of natural product extraction, catalysis, pharmaceutical processes, and adsorbents . DESs are also called second-generation ionic liquids (ILs) because of their excellent properties, such as low vapor pressures, a wide liquid range, low price, simple preparation processes, and low melting points, and have become ideal substitutes for traditional solvents and ILs …”

“…Both the chemical stability and the antimicrobial activity of the two antibiotics was increased several folds by incorporation into the solvents compared with an aqueous solution. The solubility of antofoxacin hydrochloride, an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family, was found to be increased in a deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride:para-toluenesulfonic acid 1:2 compared with ethanol:water and ethanol:acetonitrile mixtures (Zhang et al, 2019).…”

“…antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have also been successfully demonstrated by the introduction of therapeutic DES (THEDES) for oral and transdermal drug delivery. 19,20 However, these stabilisation effects are not yet fully understood and should be additionally investigated on a case-by-case basis using computational and experimental methods.…”
