Solitary Metastasis From Occult Follicular Carcinoma of the Thyroid Mimicking Trigeminal Neurinoma. Case Report.

Abstract: A 50-year-old woman presented with an extremely uncommon case of solitary metastasis from follicular carcinoma of the thyroid, which presented clinically as trigeminal neurinoma. Neuroimaging detected a tumor in the right petrous apex, which was removed surgically. Histological examination showed metastatic follicular carcinoma of the thyroid. However, no primary tumor was detected by various investigations. The tumor recurred twice, and was treated surgically both times. The patient finally agreed to adjuvant… Show more

“…The lung is the most common metastatic site of thyroid carcinoma, followed by the bone [11, 21, 45, 47]. Skull metastasis of thyroid carcinoma is rare, with a small number of reported cases [24, 6–8, 12, 1924, 2628, 30, 32–35, 3840, 42, 44, 45, 49–51, 53, 54, 56, 57, 60, 63–65, 68–70, 73, 77, 78]. The largest series of skull metastasis from thyroid carcinoma reported a frequency of only 2.5% among 473 patients [45].…”

“…The largest series of skull metastasis from thyroid carcinoma reported a frequency of only 2.5% among 473 patients [45]. Moreover, skull base metastasis from DTC is even rarer, with only 28 reported cases, including 18 cases of skull base metastasis from FTC [6, 7, 24, 30, 39, 44, 45, 49, 50, 54, 56, 57, 60, 63, 69, 70, 78] and 10 cases from PTC [4, 12, 20, 23, 34, 38, 64, 65, 77] (Table 2). In this review article, the clinicopathological and molecular histochemical features and treatment modalities of skull base metastasis of DTC, namely, FTC and PTC, are discussed with a review of literatures on molecular pathogenesis.…”

“…6,25) Only 25 adult cases of cerebral RTs, including AT/RTs and malignant RTs, have been reported. 1,2,8,10,[13][14][15]19,23,24,27,31,32,38,39,41,42,45) Only 6 cases of epithelioid glioblastoma with a rhabdoid component have been reported. 16,26,28,47) However, the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System classifies AT/RTs as embryonal tumors, but does not list malignant RT and rhabdoid glioblastoma as distinct categories.…”

“…The occurrence of metastases in Meckel's cave is described for esophageal and colorectal adenocarcinoma as well as breast carcinoma [5,6,12]. Intracranial metastases of the ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) nerves or the trigeminal nerve trunk have been reported previously with follicular carcinoma of the thyroid [13], systemic lymphoma [14], hepatocellular carcinoma, ovarian cancer and melanoma of the skin [15][16][17].…”
