Solitary Lymphoblastic Lymphoma of the Thoracic Spine

Abstract: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma rarely originates from bone, and even more infrequently from a vertebral body. Lymphoblastic lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and results from an abnormality in adaptive immune cells. A 27-year-old man presented with a two-month history of night sweats, weight loss, and severe back pain. Radiological studies demonstrated an osteolytic lesion compressing the subarachnoid space at the T11 level. Posterolateral fusion with decompression was performed and a pathologic exami… Show more

“…Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the most common primary bone lymphoid malignancy, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, such as our case, accounts for the greatest percentage of cases (Qureshi et al, 2010 andDeshmukh et al, 2004). In addition, there are several unusual cell types of bone lymphoma, such as Burkitt's lymphoma, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and peripheral T cell lymphoma (Qureshi et al, 2010 andPark et al, 2012). The cell type distribution may be various according to the age.…”

“…PBLL only accounts for 10-25% of all PLL and typically presents with subcutaneous, soft tissue, bone, and lymph node disease in children or young adults. Primary uncommon lesions of PBLL in testicles, localized skin, pancreas, and musculoskeletal system on 18 F-FDG PET imaging were reported, with SUV max ranging from 3.7 to 19.1 (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Besides that, there are also case reports with initial symptoms of ovaries, retroperitoneum, tonsil, uterus, stomach, colon, mediastinum, and both lytic and blastic bone lesions (10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…Primary vertebral location of non-Hodgkin lymphomas is rare and accounts for 1.7 % of all primary bone lymphoma [9]. Spinal lymphomas are more commonly found to take origin in the epidural space and derive from normal lymphoid tissue in the epidural space [9]. Spinal giant primary solitary B-LBL has not yet been described.…”
