Solitary hydatid cyst in the forearm: A case report

Abstract: HighlightsHydatid cysts usually arise in the liver and lungs but vary rarely in the forearm. We present a rare case of a solitary intramuscular forearm hydatid cyst in a young woman. We aim to increase the awareness of unusual sites for hydatid cysts. The cyst was attached to the median nerve and excised completely. This case was unique because of solitary nature and unusual location of the cyst.

“…2017). Primary muscular hydatid cysts are commonly asymptomatic for this the diagnosis highly dependent on imaging techniques to detect the cystic space-occupying lesion (Raheef Alatassi et al 2018). These include Xray radiography, taking into consideration that only 38% of patients will show soft tissue masses and calcification via X-ray radiography (Combalia, S. Sastre-Solsona.…”

“…The surgical approach must be individualized depending on the cyst features. However the total excision of the cyst to avoid its rupture and spillage is the gold standard treatment (Raheef Alatassi et al 2018) Percutaneous aspiration, infusion of scolicidal agents, and re-aspiration, under imaging guidance, can be used as an alternative to surgery in inoperable case (Samer Makki, Mohamed Al-Hakkak. 2018).…”

“…The thoracic spine is most commonly involved followed by the lumbar and then the sacral. 1 2 We report a 21-year-old female who presented with nonhealing ulcer in the right leg, gradually progressing back pain radiating to both lower limbs, paraparesis, and urinary complaints, such as urgency and frequency, for a duration of 3 months. She hailed from rural Eastern India and belonged to low socioeconomic strata.…”

“…Unusual site of primary hydatid cysts is attributed to the passage of oncospheres through precapillary anastomosis bypassing the lung and liver parenchyma. 2 The cyst attains huge size due to the absence of pericyst and remains asymptomatic for years. Clinical presentation is nonspecific and occurs due to compression caused by the expanding cyst on the adjacent structures.…”
