Solitary fibrous tumour of the female genital tract: a clinicopathological analysis of 25 cases

Abstract: Gynaecological SFT can be diagnosed reliably with careful morphological evaluation and judicious use of immunohistochemical stains, and should be considered in the diagnostic workup of spindle cell tumours of unclear lineage in the female genital tract.

“…SFTs usually show strong positivity with CD34, bcl‐2 and CD99, while they are negative for SMA, desmin and inhibin. The thecomas and fibromas show positivity with inhibin, while fibroids show uptake of desmin and SMA . The typical immunohistochemistry findings of the positivity with bcl‐2 and CD‐34 in the background of spindle‐shaped cells helped confirm the diagnosis of SFT in the present patient.…”

“…They are extremely rare in the female reproductive system and have a predilection for the vulva, vagina and cervix . To date, only one case of benign SFT of the ovary has been reported, but the patient was of the postmenopausal age group . To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a benign SFT arising from the ovary in a patient in the reproductive age group.…”

“…Occasional fibromas are quite vascular, which prompts brief mention of the potential differential diagnosis with solitary fibrous tumor, rare examples of which have been primary in the ovary. 20 The classic features of solitary fibrous tumor, particularly dilated, branching, so-called staghorn-like blood vessels, should bring that neoplasm to mind and prompt staining for STAT6, which should be discriminatory in most cases although it should be noted that in the study just cited, 5% of tumors in the fibroma-thecoma category (evaluated for comparison) showed some weak focal staining for STAT6.…”
