Coral skeletons were long assumed to have a spherulitic structure, that is, a radial distribution of acicular aragonite (CaCO 3 ) crystals with their c-axes radiating from series of points, termed centers of calcification (CoCs). This assumption was based on morphology alone, not on crystallography. Here we measure the orientation of crystals and nanocrystals and confirm that corals grow their skeletons in bundles of aragonite crystals, with their caxes and long axes oriented radially and at an angle from the CoCs, thus precisely as expected for feather-like or "plumose" spherulites. Furthermore, we find that in both synthetic and coral aragonite spherulites at the nanoscale adjacent crystals have similar but not identical orientations, thus demonstrating by direct observation that even at nanoscale the mechanism of spherulite formation is non-crystallographic branching (NCB), as predicted by theory. Finally, synthetic aragonite spherulites and coral skeletons have similar angle spreads, and angular distances of adjacent crystals, further confirming that coral skeletons are spherulites. This is important because aragonite grows anisotropically, 10 times faster along the c-axis than along the a-axis direction, and spherulites fill space with crystals growing almost exclusively along the c-axis, thus they can fill space faster than any other aragonite growth geometry, and create isotropic materials from anisotropic crystals. Greater space filling rate and isotropic mechanical behavior are key to the skeleton's supporting function and therefore to its evolutionary success. In this sense, spherulitic growth is Nature's 3D printing. KEYWORDS: Ion attachment, crystallization by particle attachment, CPA, biomineralization, PEEM, PIC-mapping, mesocrystal S pherulites are polycrystalline structures in which acicular crystals radiate from a common center and grow approximately synchronously so the final shape of a spherulite resembles a sphere. 1−7 Figure 1 shows two types of spherulites: "spherical spherulite", in which the crystal fibers start from a point, or "plumose spherulite", in which crystal fibers radiate at an angle from the line. 7 Spherulites start forming as an aggregate of parallel acicular crystals termed "fibers", then form a "sheaf of wheat" structure, and with the growth of more fibers eventually become complete spheres. 8 In an ideal spherulite, fibers radiate from the center and contain all possible orientations within the sphere. Since the fast-growing axis in aragonite (CaCO 3 ) is the c-axis, 9 in spherulites each fiber elongation direction coincides with the crystalline c-axis. 10,11 In real spherulites, biogenic 12 and synthetic, 7 the crystal orientations are not perfectly radial nor continuously varying with angle, they deviate slightly from radial and exhibit small but abrupt changes in orientation, termed "branching". The formation of complex hierarchical nanostructures has attracted a lot of attention from both the fundamental science and potential applications point of view. Spherulite structures with radial fibrillar branches have been found in various solids; however, their growth mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we report real time imaging of the formation of twodimensional (2D) iron oxide spherulite nanostructures in a liquid cell using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By tracking the growth trajectories, we show the characteristics of the reaction front and growth kinetics. Our observations reveal that the tip of a growing branch splits as the width exceeds certain sizes (5.5-8.5 nm). The radius of a spherulite nanostructure increases linearly with time at the early stage, transitioning to nonlinear growth at the later stage. Furthermore, a thin layer of solid is accumulated at the tip and nanoparticles from secondary nucleation also appear at the growing front which later develop into fibrillar branches. The spherulite nanostructure is polycrystalline with the co-existence of ferrihydrite and Fe 3O4 through-out the growth. A growth model is further established, which provides rational explanations on the linear growth at the early stage and the nonlinearity at the later stage of growth.

Spherulites are generally fabricated from cooling polymer melts, while their fabrication under mild conditions or from small molecule materials has been barely reported. Besides, organic luminescent molecules typically suffer from low quantum yields in a solid state. Moreover, preparing material with interconnected and simultaneous changes in structural and fluorescent colors is challenging. Here, we present the first solution‐derived spherulites with unique interconnected structural and fluorescent colors, self‐assembled from stearoylated monosaccharides at room temperature. D‐galactose stearoyl ester self‐assembled into banded spherulites, containing twisted nanoplates and interconnected simultaneously changing structural and fluorescent colors. In comparison, D‐mannose stearoyl ester can only form non‐banded spherulites, which contain oriented nanoplates and uniform structural and fluorescent colors. Such materials revealed a novel negative correlation between fluorescence and birefringence, termed alignment‐promoted quenching propensity. Remarkably, the solid‐state fluorescence quantum yields of galactose and mannose‐derived spherulites are as high as 49 ± 2% and 51 ± 2% respectively, approximately ten times higher than those of unmodified monosaccharides. These quantum yield values are among the highest of reported organic nonconventional fluorophores and even comparable to those of conventional aromatic chromophores. Moreover, these spherulites manifested an unexpected excitation‐dependent multicolor photoluminescence with a broad‐spectrum emission (410−620 nm). They show multiple peaks in the photoluminescent emission spectra and broad fluorescence lifetime distributions, which should be attributed to the clustering of a variety of oxygen‐containing functional groups as emissive moieties.
