Solidification of additive-enhanced phase change materials in spherical enclosures with convective cooling

Abstract: Solidification of eicosane with and without nanoadditives is experimentally investigated in spherical enclosures subject to convective cooling in water and air. The effects of additive volume fraction and external convective cooling conditions (i.e., the heat transfer medium, subcooling, and flow velocity) on the solidification process are examined. The results are compared with a conduction-controlled thermal network model accounting for the enclosure and PCM resistances, as well as the convective subcooling.… Show more

“…The outdoor night cooling method is only intended for the peak shifting and decreasing of the daytime temperatures. As an alternative method of getting out the TES during the night, some experts use the fan to increase the heat exchange between co_oil and air [12][13][14][15][16]31]. .…”

“…Weather conditions of day and night are not always the same, so that loads of cooling and heating are not always balanced. The solidification process becomes an important aspect in which the role of PCM cell size and solidification agent are important, so that solidification activation, such as dew point convective cooling, will be useful [31].…”

“…The mechanical stress in the capsule provoked by the different density has been also considered, although no volume change is considered in this case [29,30]. Experimental studies, on the other hand, have used transparent capsules to monitor the solid fraction of PCM [19,25,31,32], as well as temperature probes in different positions within the capsule [18,33,34]. The results typically show good agreement between simulations and experiments [20,[35][36][37], albeit in ideal conditions.…”

“…The results typically show good agreement between simulations and experiments [20,[35][36][37], albeit in ideal conditions. However, these studies consider a capsule in a thermostated fluid, either at flowing [22,26,34] or (almost) at rest [18,19].…”

“…Molecular simulation [12][13][14][15] has gained wide application in the research of material properties in recent years with the fast advancement of computer technology. Molecular dynamics (MD) is an indispensable computational tool for studying the microstructure and surface morphological evolution of coatings and thin films upon varying incident flux compositions [16,17] and energies [18][19][20].…”
