Solid-state semiconductors are better alternatives to arc-lamps for efficient and uniform illumination in minimal access surgery

Abstract: The LED endo-illuminator provides more uniform illumination with sharper shadows, less flickering and better illumination for visual perception than the arc-lamp-based system currently used.

“…Furthermore, lighting using LEDs is characterized by flat illumination uniformity and better illumination, allowing superior discrimination of fine details in the peripheral endoscopic field. 12 The results of task B confirm that the additional shadow information with the SOIS can improve task performance even under a magnified laparoscopic view resulting from the short LTD. In general, laparoscopic images appear more 2D and few spatial aspects appear in the middle or far range LTDs.…”

“…The removal of the light fi bers that are usually needed in standard endoscopes using xenon light sources creates more space that can be dedicated to the additional imagers in the FUSE system [14]. This sort of illumination results in a slightly illumination for visual perception [16].…”

“…Ankur Gogoi is also sources. In this context, an LED [9], [3], [10], [11], [12], [13], which has recently become a standard light source for endoscopic diagnosis and surgery, despite the inherent advantages of longer lifetime, higher efficiency and lower power consumption, is unfortunately incoherent and therefore needs a fiber bundle [14], [15] for efficient light coupling because of the large LED dispersion angle. Such fiber bundle based light delivery structures typically possess an outer diameter of several millimeters [16], which ultimately overshadows the advantages of miniature CMOS cameras.…”
