“…Oxygen and nitrogen functional groups are common functional groups that are spontaneously generated during bottom-up preparation, including microwave and hydrothermal methods. 24,38,39 Among various oxygen and nitrogen functional groups, carbonyl and amino groups drew great scientific attention owing to their significant contribution to tailoring the CDs' optical and electronic properties. 1,19,30 Then, the carbonyl and amino functional groups effect on the CDs' properties will be a spotlight in this study.…”

“…It suggested that optimizing the concentration ratio of the amino to carbonyl groups on CDs is an effective way of tuning the CDs' absorption for any application, including energy conversion and biomedical. 38,50,51 The molecular orbital energy level diagram of amino CDs-CQO in various N/O atomic ratios is shown in Fig. 5.…”

“…28 In addition, the carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials that are more than 20 nm in size are known and denoted as Carbon Nanoparticles (CNPs). [30][31][32] Later in this review, we use the term CLNMs for all the carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials to simplify the discussion. Since Xu et al reported the isolation of carbon nanoparticles during the purification of singlewalled carbon nanotubes, the development of the CLNMs synthesis method has followed two main synthesis routes, namely top-down and bottom-up approaches (Fig.…”

“…CLNMs generally exhibit the main optical absorption in the UV region (230-360 nm) and tail extension into the visible light region. [7][8][9][10]15,30 These peaks are usually ascribed to the pp* transition of the conjugated CQC system and non-bonding np* transition of the CQO, C-N, CQN bonds. 37,38 These absorption features are beneficial for wide applications, such as in UV protection films, 10,39 solar conversion layers, 40 and energy conversion for environmental or biomedical needs.…”
