The gold abundance in basic rocks, which normally varies between 0.5 and 5 ppb, has served as a very important indicator in many geoscience studies, including those focused on the planetary differentiation, redistribution of elements during the crustal process, and ore genesis. However, because gold is a monoisotopic element that exhibits a nugget effect, it is very difficult to quantify its ultra-low levels in rocks, which significantly limits our understanding of the origin of gold and its circulation between the Earth crust, mantle, and core. In this work, we summarize various sample digestion and combined preconcentration methods for the determination of gold amounts in rocks. They include fire assay, fire assay combined with Te coprecipitation and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) or laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, fusion combined with Te coprecipitation and anion exchange resins, dry chlorination, wet acid digestion combined with precipitation, ion exchange resins, solvent extraction, polyurethane foam, extraction chromatography, novel solid adsorbents, and direct determination by INAA. In addition, the faced challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed.

A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of azine (neutral red) and triphenyl methane (rosaniline) dye has been developed using tannic acid-polyurethane foam (TPF). TPF was prepared by coupling a polyhydroxypolyurethane foam matrix with tannic acid. TPF was characterized using a combination of analytical methods including IR and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, density and pH ZPC . The qualitative and quantitative determination of dyes is based on its sorption on the surface of the TPF. The sorption behavior of dye onto the TPF was investigated by batch and dynamic processes. The maximum sorption of neutral red and rosaniline was in the pH range of 7-9. The kinetics of sorption of the dye by the TPF was found to be fast with average values of half-life of sorption of 1.2 min. The equilibrium process was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The visual detection limit of dye in aqueous solution is 0.1 μg mL -1 . The Sandell's sensitivity is 0.26 ng cm -2 with molar absorptivity 1.3 × 10 6 L mol -1 cm -1 . The average sorption capacity of TPF and the recovery of dyes were 0.47 mmol g -1 and 96.4 % (RSD ~ 1.5%, n=7). The method has been applied to various wastewater samples. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an important inorganic-organic hybrid material with a threedimensional structure. Polyurethane (PU) is a widely applied polymer that has versatile properties with the change of two phase structure. When POSS is incorporated into PU by physical or chemical methods, many properties can be greatly improved, such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradation resistance, and water resistance. This paper reviews the recent progress in preparation, structure, and performance of POSS-modified polyurethane from the viewpoint of physical blending and chemical modification.
