An effective, simple, low cost and accurate sorption-spectrophotometric platform for the extractions and subsequent quantifications of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in food and environmental samples has been described in this dissertation. The separation and preconcentration of the analyte ions were accomplished by solid phase extraction method based on the adsorption of their N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-{[(4-phenyl-5-pyridin-4-yl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio]acetyl} hydrazinecarbothioamide (MFPTAHK) complex on Amberlite XAD-8 resin in a mini column. The developed method was systematically investigated in different set of experimental parameters that influence the separation and preconcentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. The precision of the method was determined by reproducibility studies and expressed as relative standard deviations (RSD %) which were less than 4% for both analyte ions. The limits of detections (LODs) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions based on the three times the standard deviation of the blanks (N:10) were found to be 0.31 µg L -1 and 0.86 µg L -1 , respectively. The developed SPE procedure was utilized for the simultaneous extraction and determinations of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions levels in rice, cracked wheat and red lentil as food samples and various water samples.

ABSTRACT.A novel method using a packed column with perlite as a new sorbent has been developed for preconcentration of trace amounts of zinc and cadmium prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Several factors that may be affected on the solid phase extraction (SPE) process, such as pH, sample volume, flow rate, volume and concentration of eluent were studied and optimized. Linearity was maintained between 0.001-0.1 µg mL −1 for zinc, and 0.001-0.3 µg mL −1 for cadmium. Detection limits based on 3Sb for zinc and cadmium were 1.8 and 1.6 ng mL −1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations of eight replicate measurements of 0.02 µg mL −1 of zinc and 0.05 µg mL −1 of cadmium ions were 2.1% and 1.8%, respectively. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to extraction and determination of the zinc and cadmium ions in the water and food samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Recebido em 29/5/09; aceito em 30/7/09; publicado na web em 11/1/10 An efficient flotation method based on the combination of flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and separation and preconcentration step for determination of Cr , Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ ions in various real samples by the possibility of applying bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)-1,4-butanediimine (BHABDI) as a new collector was studied. The influence of pH, amount of BHABDI as collector, sample matrix, type and amount of eluting agent, type and amount of surfactant as floating agent, ionic strength and air flow rates i.e. variables affecting the efficiency of the extraction system was evaluated. It is ascertained that metal ions such as iron can be separated simultaneously from matrix in the presence of 0.012 mM ligand, 0.025% (w/v) of CTAB to a test sample of 750 mL at pH 6.5. These ions can be eluted quantitatively with 6 mL of 1.0 mol L -1 HNO 3 in methanol which lead to the enrichment factor of 125. The detection limits for analyte ions were in the range of 1.3-2.4 ng mL -1. The method has been successfully applied for determination of trace amounts of ions in various real samples.
