Solid Phase Extraction Combined Direct Spectrophotometric Determination of Brilliant Blue in Food Using β-Cyclodextrin Polymer

Abstract: A new and sensitive solid phase extraction (SPE) combined direct spectrophotometry for determination of brilliant blue (BB) in food has been developed, in which β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP) is used as a SPE adsorbent to extract BB from aqueous solutions to form a solid supramolecular complex with a 1:3 molar ratio of BB to β-CDP, and BB in β-CDP was directly determined by a solid phase spectrophotometry. SPE conditions were pH 7.0, temperature 20°C, ionic strength 0.1 mol/l, and shaking time 40 min. The cali… Show more

“…Methods of analysis in food Methods described in the literature for the detection of Brilliant Blue FCF are based on spectrophotometry (Vidotti et al, 2005;Li, 2008), HPLC (Kirschbaum andco-workers, 2003, Pereira Alves et al, 2008;Vachirapatama et al, 2008), ion chromatography (Chen et al, 1998), cathodic stripping voltametry (Florian et al, 2002) and capillary electrophoresis (Ishikawa et al, 2004). Li (2008) proposed a solid phase extraction followed by direct spectrophotometric determination of Brilliant Blue FCF in food samples. Kirschbaum and co-workers (2003) developed an HPLC-DAD method for the determination of permitted colorants including Brilliant Blue FCF.…”

“…Among these methods, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [23,24] has advantages of better resolution and fast, but needs complicated sample pretreatment process, but not suitable to analyze a large sum of samples. Spectrophotometry [25,26] is simple and fit for analyzing batch samples, but needs preconcentration technique. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) [27] is also a sensor for brilliant blue analysis which has good chemical stability, wide pH range, high luminous efficiency, and excellent electrochemical performance, but the surface treatment of electrode is a little time-consuming and complicated.…”

“…used CD polymers to detect the EOs in Lavandula angustifolia / Mentha piperita , finding that the volatility of the aromatic compound was reduced and a stable 1:1 inclusion complex was formed. Li et al . proposed CD polymer application in food development by using solid‐phase extraction (SPE) technology combined with spectrophotometry to detect Brilliant Blue.…”
