Solid-Liquid Extraction with Low Temperature Purification Coupled with Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry for Determination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sewage Sludge

Abstract: Sewage sludge is the residue produced by the wastewater treatment plants, which can be used as soil conditioner in agriculture. However, the current legislation recommends monitoring chemical contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, solid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification (SLE-LTP) was optimized and validated for monitoring six PCBs. The analyses were performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Sulfur interference was removed by 1.5 g of copper metal. T… Show more

“…For the optimization of the SLE-LTP procedure, we first considered the methods of detection of organic chemical contaminants in sewage sludge reported in the literature. [30][31][32] After evaluating the best contaminant extraction conditions in these previous studies, we proposed a strategy for the extraction of organochlorine pesticides in sewage sludge. One important point to considerer is that the first procedure performed, which was similar to that described in the procedure section, but without using the sorbent, provided satisfactory pesticide recoveries, ranging from 71 to 124%.…”

“…Lately, a simple and efficient extraction method denominated Liquid–liquid extraction with low temperature partitioning (LLE–LTP) has been applied as a clean‐up step for several complex matrices (sewage sludge, milk, and beverages) for determination of polycarbonate biphenyls (PCBs), chloramphenicol, and carbamates . The sample preparation procedure consists of the addition of a small portion of an organic solvent (usually acetonitrile) to the sample of interest, manual agitation, and subsequent cooling of the sample to a low temperature in order to freeze the aqueous phase.…”
