Five aromatic borate anions, namely tetrakis(4-phenoxyphenyl)borate (1), tetrakis(biphenyl)borate (2), tetrakis(2-naphthyl)borate (3), tetrakis(4-phenylphenol)borate (4), and tetrakis(4-phenoxy)borate (5), have been prepared and tested as ion-recognition sites in chemical sensors for certain aromatic cations and metal ions. To gain further insight into the complexation of the cations, some complexes have been prepared and structurally characterized. The complexation behavior of 1 and 2 towards N-methylpyridinium (6), 1-ethyl-4-(methoxycarbonyl)pyridinium (7), tropylium (8), imidazolium (9), and 1-methylimidazolium (10) cations has been studied, and the stability constants of the complexes of 1 with cations 6 and 8 have been measured to compare them with the values for the previously studied complexes of tetraphenylborate. The structures of the borate anions and their complexes have been characterized by NMR and mass spectrometric methods. X-ray crystal structures have been determined for potassium tetrakis(4-phenoxyphenyl)borate (K(+)1), N-methylpyridinium tetrakis(4-phenoxyphenyl)borate (61), 1-ethyl-4-(methoxycarbonyl)pyridinium tetrakis(4-phenoxyphenyl)borate (71), tropylium tetrakis(4-phenoxyphenyl)borate (81), and imidazolium tetrakis(biphenyl)borate (92). The results show that borate derivatives are potential candidates for a completely new family of charged carriers for use in cation-selective electrodes.

Molecular redox compounds show promise for the development of solid contact ion selective electrodes (SC‐ISEs) for anion determinations. In this work, a hydrophobic bis‐tridentate Ru‐bipod complex was studied as a molecular redox transducer in voltammetric SC‐ISEs. Thin film voltammetric behavior was achieved in films comprised of the Ru‐bipod complex, polyvinylchloride (PVC) and a plasticiser, nitrophenyloctylether (NPOE). Importantly, the choice of plasticiser had a significant effect on the SC‐ISE response of the Ru‐bipod complex; i. e., voltammetric responses of the Ru‐bipod complex in NPOE films were sharper and more intense than in bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS) films. Moreover, addition of tetradodecylammonium tetrakis(4‐chlorophenyl)borate (ETH 500) to the membrane had an unfavorable impact on detection of anions due to oxidation of this salt in the film. Although the thin film electrode showed close‐to‐Nernstian behavior in anion responses, the detection responses in the presence of very hydrophilic anions such as sulfate ion were shifted to higher potentials (>1 V) with a subsequent loss of sensitivity. Overall, the Ru‐bipod complex operates as a simple transducer in SC‐ISEs with benefits in anion detection.

Highly Selective All‐Plastic, Disposable, Cu²⁺‐Selective Electrodes

Conducting polymers (CP) remain a promising material to construct stable potential all-solid-state ion-selective potentiometric electrodes. The unique properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) ions, PEDOT-PSS: high CP stability and affinity of doping anions towards Cu 2þ ions, make it highly attractive for construction of all-solid-state copper(II)-selective electrodes with outstanding selectivity. The additional benefits can arise from solution processability of commercially available PEDOT-PSS system. This material was highly promising for a new sensor arrangement, i.e. to obtain disposable, planar and flexible all-plastic Cu 2þ -selective electrodes. These sensors can be obtained by casting a commercially available dispersion of PEDOT-PSS (Baytron P) on a plastic, non-conducting support material. The CP being both electrical lead and ion-to-electron transducer, was covered with plastic, solvent polymeric Cu 2þ selective membrane. This extremely simple arrangement, after conditioning in dilute Cu 2þ solution, was characterized with linear Nernstian responses within the activities range from: 0.1 to 10 À4 M, followed by super-Nernstian responses for lower activities. The latter result points to effective elimination of primary ions leakage from the plastic membrane / transducer phase and has resulted in significantly improved selectivities. Obtained log K
