In the present research, an industrially aged Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was used as a basis for the study on the sulfur deactivation and the development of more resistant catalytic materials. The catalytic activities of both industrially and laboratory-aged materials in DMDS oxidation were studied in addition to characterization by XRD, XPS, FESEM, TEM and N2 adsorption. The industrial ageing induced a phase change from γ-Al2O3 towards θ-Al2O3, formation of aluminum sulfates and an increase in Pt particle size as well as a change in the oxidation state of Pt to a higher state. These changes caused an increase of 30°C in the light-off temperature for DMDS oxidation. Accelerated ageing in the presence of SO2 and H2O vapor at 400°C for 5 h decreased the activity of the Pt/Al2O3 at the same level than for the industrially aged catalyst even though smaller sulfur content and no sintering of γ-Al2O3 were observed. Pt sintering (10-20 nm) in both cases was observed. The XPS results confirmed the formation of new sulfate phases and the interaction between sulfur and the active phase as well as the support of the catalyst undergone accelerated ageing. After the accelerated ageing of copper-based catalysts, the 0.3Pt10Cu/Al2O3|0.8SiO2|0.2 catalyst showed an interesting resistance towards sulfur deactivation, as it was expected.

Here we present oxygen-nonstoichiometric transition metal oxides as highly prominent catalyst material candidates to catalyze the industrially important oxidation reactions of hydrocarbons when hydrogen peroxide is employed as an environmentally benign oxidant.The proof-of-concept data are revealed for the complex cobalt oxide, YBaCo 4 O 7+δ (0 < δ < 1.5), in the oxidation process of cyclohexene. In the two-hour reaction experiments YBaCo 4 O 7+δ was found to be significantly more active (>60% conversion) than the commercial TiO 2 catalyst (< 20%) even though its surface area was less than one tenth of that of TiO 2 . In the seven-hour experiments with YBaCo 4 O 7+δ , 100% conversion of cyclohexene was achieved. Immersion calorimetry measurements showed that the high catalytic activity may be ascribed to the exceptional ability of YBaCo 4 O 7+δ to dissociate H 2 O 2 and release active oxygen to the oxidation reaction.

In this chapter, stationary and automotive technologies for gaseous and particulate pollution abatement are discussed. Stationary pollution abatement technologies involve the reduction of NO x emissions from the exhaust gases of power plants, industrial boilers, and gas turbines, and are based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) using ammonia. In automotive pollution control, internal combustion engines represent the major source for the emission of NO x , CO, and unburned hydrocarbons (HCs), whereas diesel engines contribute to the emission of soot and NO x . These gaseous pollutants can be minimized with primary measures, for example, modification of the combustion process, and with additional secondary measures (exhaust purification by catalysts). The most frequent type of catalytic converter in automobiles is the three‐way catalyst (TWC) in stoichiometric operated gasoline engines, which simultaneously converts NO x , CO, and HCs. NO x emissions from lean‐operated engines can be removed by urea‐SCR and NO x storage reduction catalysts (NSC). Catalytic CO oxidation is an essential reaction of the TWC and NSC, and is also applied in diesel engines using the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) that can oxidize gaseous HCs as well as HCs adsorbed onto soot particles. Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are used to remove soot from diesel exhaust by filtration of the particles through the porous walls of the filter. The DPF application requires regeneration; that is, oxidation of the stored soot particles, which is accomplished by indirect (NO 2 ‐assisted) and direct (redox metal oxide‐based) catalytic oxidation of the accumulated soot particles in the DPF.
