Solar wind He pickup ions as source of tens-of-keV/n neutral He atoms observed by the HSTOF/SOHO detector

Abstract: Context. Since 1996, during periods of low solar activity, the HSTOF instrument on board the SOHO satellite has been measuring weak fluxes of He atoms of 28-58 keV/n (helium energetic neutral atoms, He ENAs). The probable source region is the inner heliosheath. Aims. We aim to understand the emission mechanism of He ENAs based on knowledge of the heliosheath spatial extent and plasma content resulting from Voyager 1 and 2 measurements in the period after termination shock crossings. Methods. He ENAs are genera… Show more

“…Due to various possible implementations of ENA detectors in future space experiments, the estimations are performed for all sky observations for a wide range of energies from 0.2 keV/nuc to 130 keV/nuc, or equivalently for speeds from 200 km s −1 to 5000 km s −1 . The method used in this paper follows the scheme presented in Grzedzielski et al (2013Grzedzielski et al ( , 2014, and in Paper I, with some modifications discussed below. The modifications are employed to allow for the analysis of heavier elements with a limited knowledge of the reaction cross-sections.…”

“…However, the modeled signal was significantly larger than the observed one. Grzedzielski et al (2014) extended the model to the higher energies and were able to match the HSTOF observations using Voyagers observations of the PUIs spectrum in the inner heliosheath (Stone et al 2008), as well as the thickness of the inner heliosheath obtained from in situ observations Stone et al 2013). …”

“…This potential was used by Grzedzielski et al (2014). The above-mentioned potentials assume a purely hydrodynamical flow and do not include deceleration of the heliosheath plasma due to charge exchanges of plasma ions with the interstellar neutral atoms.…”
