Solar Radiation Estimation on Building Roofs and Web-Based Solar Cadastre

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this study is the estimation of solar irradiance on building roofs in complex Alpine landscapes. Very high resolution geometric models of the building roofs are generated by means of advanced automated image matching methods. Models are combined with raster and vector data sources to estimate the incoming solar radiation hitting the roofs. The methodology takes into account for atmospheric effects, site latitude and elevation, slope and aspect of the terrain as well as the effects of shadow… Show more

“…Typical approaches and commercial solutions rely on building footprints in order to easily identify the roofs from the available DSM. In this work, to overcome the misalignment and distortion issues of existing vector datasets (Agugiaro et al, 2012), an automated method was develop in order to extract and separate footprints of adjacent buildings . The method processes image-based point clouds in order to extract geometric primitives useful for a more complete and detailed reconstruction of roof buildings as well as footprint generation.…”

“…These studies have been at the scale of a city [20,21], over parts of a country [22] or at continental scale [3,23]. In some cases, only the variation in solar irradiation is taken into account while other authors include some of the effects listed above.…”

“…Several techniques have been applied so far for the calculation of the solar incidence on roofs (Agugiaro et al, 2012;Agugiaro et al, 2011;Hofierka and Suri, 2002;Nguyen and Pearce, 2010) trying to find the most suitable for the installation of solar panels with optimum performance. These techniques generally use simplified models and approximations of the positions and orientations of the roofs, which could imply errors in the calculation of the solar incidence on the surfaces of the roofs causing large variations in their productivity.…”
