Summary The choice of great places for installation of solar power plants has become a key issue in terms of project planning because of the increased number of investments in the photovoltaic sector. This study is a systematic review of the literature that seeks to identify the determining factors in choosing the best location for solar photovoltaic power plants, through previous research on the application of renewable energy technologies in great contexts of location. Among a total of 130 academic studies filtered by the keywords “photovoltaic energy,” “power plants,” “location,” and “factor” on the bases ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and IEEE, a total of 27 studies were identified. These articles were carefully explored, including years of publication, countries of origin, and identification of factors that each author demonstrated. It has been extracted 28 factors, organized in six points of view: socioenvironmental, location, economic, political, climatic, and orographic. It was verified that the determining factors for choosing the best locations are solar irradiation, substation distance, slope, distance of roads, distance from urban areas, and land use. The results of this research may assist academic students and investors in identifying factors that they should consider in their decision making and may also assist in the efficient planning of renewable energy management to ensure the sustainable development of power generation through the photovoltaic source.

The aim of this study was to identify suitable locations for solar kilns in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, based on geographical and climatic conditions and restricted areas. The criteria of the parameters, which were incorporated with Fuzzy membership functions, were used to create layers in the ArcGIS environment to draw maps of suitability. Climatic parameters, based on the Fuzzy method, were used to investigate the period of productive performance for solar kilns. The results showed a range of possible locations. The most suitable locations were in flat areas near roads. They were far from protected areas, rivers, and flood prone areas. The most productive performance period for operating solar kilns was from November until May.

Herein, a combination of a multicriteria decision‐making (MCDM) technique and geographic information system (GIS) is established to identify the most appropriate sites for the installation of large‐scale concentrated solar power (CSP) plants in the Marrakech‐Safi region located in mid‐south Morocco. For this purpose, numerous criteria affecting its deployment, such as climate, orography, location, and water resources, are taken into account. As a CSP plant requires cooling for its power block cycle, wet and dry cooling options are explored to assess the suitability of the field of study to host CSP plants with both scenarios. Results reveal that 62.4% of the study area is deemed appropriate for CSP plant hosting. Moreover, 16.1% and 7.6% of the suitable surface area is evaluated as highly suitable for wet and dry cooling systems, respectively. Nevertheless, the excellent areas represent 4.5% for both scenarios.
