Solar-like oscillations with low amplitude in the CoRoT target HD 181906

Abstract: Context. The F8 star HD 181906 (effective temperature ∼6300 K) was observed for 156 days by the CoRoT satellite during the first long run in the direction of the galactic centre. Analysis of the data reveals a spectrum of solar-like acoustic oscillations. However, the faintness of the target (m v = 7.65) means the signal-to-noise (S/N) in the acoustic modes is quite low, and this low S/N leads to complications in the analysis. Aims. We extract global variables of the star, as well as key parameters of the p mo… Show more

“…Thus, the mode damping is almost negligible during a nine-day run and we estimate the mode amplitude using the pure sine assumption, which causes the maximum mode amplitude to be 49 +8 −10 cm s −1 . The SNR of the detection is similar to the first asteroseismic results for solar-like targets, from data acquired by the CoRoT satellite (Baglin et al 2002), in particular those obtained for HD 181906 (García et al 2009).…”

“…l = 1 and l = 2). Oscillating stars also display similar signatures (Appourchaux et al 2008;García et al 2009). However, other effects could a priori cause the measured signal: temperature fluctuations in the interferometer, telescope pointing errors, albedo features on Jupiter, and solar p-modes reflected by Jupiter's atmosphere.…”

“…By making severe constraints on the fitting procedure (mode widths and mode heights set equal over the fitted frequency range) values of nine = 0, 1, 2 frequencies were obtained by García et al (2009). These differ from those obtained for a smaller frequency sets (5 n values) obtained by Verner (private communication) with less rigid constraints on the fitting procedure, and are only marginally consistent within the larger formal errors of Verner's analysis.…”

“…HD 181906 is an F8 (m v = 7.65) star observed by CoRoT for 156 days, that displays very low p-mode power in the frequency range 1000−2500 μHz , García et al 2009; it is considerably fainter than HD 49933 and HD 181420. Figure 16a gives the power spectrum and Fig.…”

“…The oscillations have tiny amplitudes, and with photometry they can only be revealed with very long high-precision time series from space, e.g. with CoRoT (Baglin 2003;Appourchaux et al 2008;García et al 2009;Deheuvels et al 2010b;Mathur et al 2010a).…”
