Solar energy farming as a development innovation for vulnerable water basins

Abstract: In vulnerable water basins, unregulated access to solar energy and groundwater can threaten water security through increased abstractions. Public and development agencies are therefore exploring options to provide farmers with additional income from solar farming while protecting groundwater resources. Solar energy farming is combined with attractive purchase guarantees in order to encourage farmers to efficiently use solar energy on-farm and sell the energy excess. This article evaluates a project from the Az… Show more

“…On the basis of lifecycle, photovoltaic is more economical and favourable in small power applications wherever electricity is not available and fuel based machines are expensive to operate. The fall in the module prices of PV systems and removal of subsidies for fossil fuels, is believed to accelerate the use of PV systems further [13].…”

“…Solar farming or solar energy farming (SEF) or agro photovoltaic (APV) generally means energy production from agricultural lands thereby raising the value of arable land further [13]. Solar panels can be set up at 15-20 feet and in proper configuration over farm fields for simultaneous crop and power harvesting without impacting the crop growth, particularly in horticultural crops.…”

“…The concept of the system utilizes the generation of electrical energy and the production of agricultural products in the same area of production [6,[9][10][11][12]. In other words, beneficial interaction, or symbiosis between these two productions in the same area, is created in this way [2,3,8,[13][14][15][16]. Solar production could also offset global energy demand if less than 1% of cropland were converted to an AV system [17].…”
