Solar energetic particle catalogs: Assumptions, uncertainties and validity of reports

Abstract: The aim of this work is to summarize the main underlying assumptions, simplifications and uncertainties while studying solar energetic particles (SEPs).In general, numerous definitions are used for the evaluation of a given SEP parameter and these different methods lead to different outcomes for a given particle event. Several catalogs of SEP events from various instruments are currently available; however, each catalog is specific to the adopted data and analysis. We investigate the differences while comparin… Show more

“…Several studies compared the initial release time of SEPs with the start time of the DH type III groups. The large uncertainties of the initial solar release time determination induce considerable uncertainty, with ensuing differences between different event catalogs that were discussed by Miteva et al (2018). The high energy resolution of the SoHO/ERNE detector allows for a more detailed determination of the initial solar release of SEPs through the velocity-dispersion analysis.…”

“…Учитывались протонные события, произведенные в 23-м цикле вспышками GOES класса М5 и выше, имеющие отклик в обоих энергетических каналах. Для учета эффекта насыщения протонные потоки корректировались по методике, описанной в работе [7]. Подобный отбор для электронов проводился на основе данных инструмента ACE/EPAM в каналах 0.139 МэВ и 0.245 МэВ.…”

“…We consider the reported particle event by different instruments to be the same phenomenon, if the reported onset (and/or peak) times are within one day and the reported peak intensities are either large or small, compared to the median value for the sample. The detailed methodology for the compilation of http://server.sepserver.eu/; Vainio et al (2013) the proton list is described in Miteva et al (2017a) where it was considered for the events in SC23. For the preset work the events in SC23 are re-analyzed and the list is extended to the ongoing SC24.…”
