Solar collectors and photovoltaics as combined heat and power systems: A critical review

Abstract: A main method to increase the solar energy utilization efficiency is to combine heat and power generation together. In this paper, a critical review of the literature on solar combined heat and power systems (CHP) is conducted, which includes solar photovoltaic/thermal systems, concentrated photovoltaic/thermal systems, and various combination with different solar collectors and applications. It shows that there are serious gaps in this field, which calls for more research. The modeling and analysis of the ele… Show more

“…The thermal energy collected on the receiver of the concentrating solar systems is typically used to produce electricity through a conventional power block, in the commonly named concentrating solar power plants. Although the basic technology had been under development for about 140 years, solar thermal electricity (STE) on grid was not achieved until the 1980s [17].The parabolic-trough solar energy technology is the most tested and the cheapest large-scale solar energy technology available today for the use of thermal solar energy with different types of working fluids [18,19]. The improvements in these parabolic-trough systems are still far from complete.…”

“…Yousefi et al [42] carry out a multi-objective optimization of component sizing of a hybrid CCHP microgrid to meet the electric needs and the heating and cooling loads of an office building in Tehran. A critical review [43] states that it is very important to analyze how hybrid energy-systems can be used to decrease the energy consumption, but also to improve the economic and environmental operation in office buildings, as the authors intend to do in the present work.…”
