Solar CIV vacuum-ultraviolet Fabry-Perot interferometers

Abstract: Aims. A tunable, high spectral resolution, high effective finesse, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is designed for obtaining narrow-passband images, magnetograms, and Dopplergrams of the transition region emission line of CIV (155 nm). Methods. The integral part of the CIV narrow passband filter package (with a 2-10 pm FWHM) consists of a multiple etalon system composed of a tunable interferometer that provides high-spectral resolution and a static low-spectral resolution interferomet… Show more

“…The temperature then increases in the chromosphere and then further increases and reaches up to a few million Kelvin (∼ 5 MK) in the corona (see Fig. 1.2, for more details see following papers: Aschwanden (2004) and Gary et al (2007). This drastic change in the temperature occurs above 1000 km from the photosphere.…”

“…They have widespread applications over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from microwaves [140] to UV [141], while record-level optical finesse were achieved in the visible/near-IR [142], especially thanks to the advent of whispering gallery mode resonators [143]. In this context, the THz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is still lacking such tools.…”

“…Solid etalons based on electro-optical and piezo-electric material crystals are way lighter and do not need the use of piezo-electric actuators, thus avoiding the introduction of mechanical vibrations in the system. Examples are LiNbO 3 or MgF 2 based etalons and liquid crystal etalons (e.g., Álvarez-Herrero et al 2006;Gary et al 2007), which can be tuned after modification of a feeding voltage signal. Crystals used in these Fabry-Pérot etalons are typically birefringent and therefore able to modify the polarization of light.…”
