Sol-Gel Synthesis of TiO2/SiO2 and ZnO/SiO2 Composite Films and Evaluation of Their Photocatalytic Activity towards Methyl Green

Abstract: The TiO2/SiO2 and ZnO/SiO2 composite films were prepared by sol-gel dip coating method. The surface morphology and crystal structure of thin films were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with elementary dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Optical properties of films have been investigated using ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy (UV-visible spectroscopy). The photocatalytic activity was established by testing the degradation and decolorization of methyl g… Show more

“…Further methods were developed to synthesize the composite on Si glass plates using zinc acetate and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of diethanolamine base. Subsequently, amorphous ZnO/SiO2 film formed after heating the plates at 400 °C, was useful in photodegradation and decolorization of methyl green under UV irradiation [4]. Moreover, the synthesis of ZnO-coated SiO2 was conducted through monodispersed silica spheres prepared by using the Stober method and zinc acetate with ethanol-water solvent in the presence of triethanolamine [5].…”

“…3 Thus, pore-size tuning is one of the most significant factors that enable the generic sol-gel technology to achieve the entrapment of many types of biomolecules of diverse sizes for a wide range of applications. [19][20][21][22][23] Silica in healthcare are found as porous glass, which can be designed to encapsulate a specific drug, which can then be released in situ by the degradation of the silica matrix, therefore maximizing therapeutic effects with the reduction of toxicological side effects. “…18 Silica matrices may also have significant advantages, for example, nanobimetal, trimetal and semiconducting oxides have been incorporated into the silicate matrix to enhance the photocatalytic process. “…[3][4][5][6] In this regard, some reported metal oxide nanocomposites have revealed excellent photocatalytic performance. [7][8][9] To date, more than 9000 different types of dye have been incorporated in the colour index. 10 MEG is one of the most common dying materials for wood, silk and cotton.…”
