Flame aerosol technology that has routinely been used in industry for inexpensive manufacture of nanostructured commodities (pigments, carbon black, fumed silica) for over a century may be one of the best processes to produce a spectrum of oxide nanoparticles. Unfortunately, these reactors have been developed through evolutionary research to produce, typically, a single product with tight specifications. As a result, there is little information regarding process design and scale-up.
