Sol-gel bioactive glass-ceramics Part II: Glass-ceramics in the CaO-SiO2-P2O5-MgO system

Abstract: Ceramics, with basic composition based on the CaO-SiO 2 -P 2 O 5 -MgO system with different Ca+ Mg/P+Si molar ratio (R), were prepared via polystep sol-gel technique. The structure of the obtained ceramic materials has been studied by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, and SEM. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of akermanite and HA for the sample with R = 1.68 and Mg substituted β-TCP and silicocarnotite for the sample with R = 2.16, after thermal treatment at 1200°C/2 h. The obtained results are in good agreement wi… Show more

“…7) [29]. The presence of peaks characteristic of C-O stretching vibrations at 1450 and 1410 cm −1 allows the classification of this layer as a B-substituted hycroxycarbonate apatite [30]. It is also worthy of mention that the peak around 930 cm −1 , characteristic of Si-OH stretching in Q 2 and Q 1 units is maintained in sample B1C even after 14 days of bioactivity (Fig.…”

“…Elemental compositions were confirmed using wavelength dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (WD‐XRF). In turtle shell, bonds stretched at 1000–1050 cm −1 , with the starting bond at 500 cm −1 , due to Si–O–Si bond stretching . Bond stretching at 932 cm −1 in turtle shell associated with rock was assigned because of Si–O–Ca bonds …”

“…The EDS spectra as shown in Fig. 3 suggested the forming of dendrite of carbonate substituted hydroxyapatite 49 which was rich in Ca, P, C, Cl, and Mg similar to glass ceramic systems 50 . Side view of apatite growing by SEM image as shown in Fig.…”
