Soil water content and wood ash fertilization on the cultivation of gladiolus

Abstract: Irrigation management, associated with the management of fertilization through the use of waste from plant material burning, has proven to be a sustainable strategy to increase the production of ornamental plants in greenhouses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of gladiolus subjected to soil water contents and wood ash fertilization in a Cerrado Oxisol. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions from April to September 2014, in a randomized block design, arranged in a 5… Show more

“…The observed increase of leaf blade dimensions might be result of augmentation of soil humidity. Similar scenario was noticed in Gladiolus grandiflorus (Pereira et al, 2016a). On the other hand, the findings of Kubikova and Zeidler (2011) did not show either temporal or spatial variability.…”

“…The significant augmentation of dimensions of generative shoots might be result of growing ground moisture. The positive relationship among soil humidity and number and dimensions of shoots, flowers and inflorescences was observed in Gladiolus grandiflorus (Porto et al 2014;Pereira et al 2016aPereira et al , 2016b. The reducing flowering of Gladiolus individuals in effect of decrease of soil moisture was also observed by Shillo and Halevy (1976).…”

“…Each experimental unit received 12 dm 3 of soil. The access tubes were installed horizontally passing through four pots to use the Diviner 2000 ® probe, as used by Pereira et al (2016). Since readings are taken every 0.1 m, the experimental units had diameter of 0.2 m and were spaced by 0.1 m, totaling one reading in the center of the pot (Figure 1).…”

“…The plant ash dose of 6.17 t ha -1 presented the highest mean calcium concentration of 1.63 g kg -1 in the recovering pasture ( Fig 5). In the first year of the wood ash application, the available calcium in the wood ash undertook the function of the soil corrective treatment (Insam et al, 2009;Saunders, 2014;Füzesi et.al, 2015;Bezerra et al, 2016;Pereira et al, 2016). Thus, possibly little calcium was made available to the plants.…”

“…In this perspective, plant ash can be applied as alternative fertilizer because it contains considerable amounts of the major nutrients required for plant growth, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium (Etiégni and Campbell, 1991;Saarsalmi et al, 2001;Bonfim-Silva et al, 2015;Iqbal and Lewandowski, 2016), low nitrogen (Saarsalmi et al, 2001) and phosphorus (Hakkila and Halaja, 1983;Santos et al, 2014). As soil corrective and alternative or even complementary fertilizer, plant ash is widely studied (Adriano et al, 1980;Vance, 1996;Demeyer et al, 2001;Füzesi et al, 2015;Bezerra et al, 2016;Pereira et al, 2016) and are still scarce in relation to tropical grasses. The use of this biomass for the production of thermal energy, producing wood ash, commonly used in industries, is growing worldwide due to the need to use renewable energy sources in response to concerns about climate change (McKendrey, 2002), higher oil prices and the need for energy security of the countries (EU, 2009, Titus et al, 2010.…”
