Soil Water Carrying Capacity for Vegetation

Abstract: Non-native plantation can effectively conserve soil and water and improve ecological environment, but soil desiccation occurs and then changes to severe desiccation in most forest and grass lands of water-limited regions, which causes soil degradation, vegetation decline and crop failure, so it is necessary to regulate the changed relationship between plant growth and soil water. However, there is a lack of a universally accepted theory to provide guidance of sustainable use of soil water resources and sustaina… Show more

“…In order to achieve sustainable use of soil water resources, there should be a sustainable use indicator of soil water resources, that is to say that sustainable use indicator of soil water resources can expresses the suitable degree plant use soil water resources and it will easily be recovered. The limit is the soil water resources use limit by plants (SWRULP) [14].The SWRULP can be defined as the soil water resources in the MID when the soil water content within the MID equals the wilting coefficient of an indicator plant [6] [14] [15]. Because the soil water content changes with soil water suction at different soil depth and the variation of soil water content with soil water suction accords with the Garden equation, so we can use the Garden equation to fit soil water content and soil water suction data and establish the soil water characteristics curve and then estimate the wilting coefficient at different soil depth [5] [16].…”

“…The infi ltration depth equals the distance from the surface to the crossover point between the two respective soil water distribution curves of soil water with soil depth before and after the rain event (fi gure 1). The MID will occur after a continuous heavy rainfall event and a long-term cumulative infi ltration process, and can be determined by a series of twocurve methods (fi gure 2) [6,7].…”

“…The available amount of branches and leaf is the branches and leaf when the density is equal to the SWCCV when the soil water supply (SWS) is equal to soil water consumption (SWC) in the root zone in the key regulating period within a growing season. Generrally, the relationship between fruit tree growth and soil water can be regulated by changing the amount of tree or plant (Guo, 2014), as for some plant, such as red plum apricot, the relationship often can be regulated by cutting some of vimens or leaf or fruit in the key regulating period within fruit expansion period because the relationship between fruit tree growth and soil water has to be regulated by changing the amount of vimens or leaf or fruit.…”
