Soil treatment with organic non-traditional additives for the improvement of earthworks

Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterise the technical and environmental implications of non-traditional treatments of a low-plasticity compacted silt (PI = 14) and to investigate their actions both at the micro-and macro-structural scales. Three non-traditional additives derived from industrial vegetal by-products were studied. These additives are classified as an acid solution (AS), an enzymatic solution (ES) and calcium lignosulfonate (LS). The first step was to characterise the effects of these treatments… Show more

“…Nevertheless, it is widely accepted that any effective changes will be measurable after 7 days. In this study, the 28-day curing time is prescribed just to compare the difference between the short-and long-term behaviours of the stabilized soils (Chang and Cho 2012;Zhang et al 2012;Sukmak et al 2013;Blanck et al 2013). …”

“…Indeed, for standard compaction energy, higher density can be reached via the use of non-traditional additives. This phenomenon is directly linked with surfactant properties of both tested additives as demonstrated in different research (Peck 1963;Berney et al 2003;Park et al 2006;Blanck et al 2014).…”

“…A detailed study on the effects of the selected nontraditional products on geotechnical characteristics of soils is available in Blanck et al (2014), in which the aspects related to the stabilisation mechanisms were also considered. In this paper, the emphasis is put on the alteration of the compaction characteristics of the soil that would be of interest in earthworks.…”
