222 Rn (radon) is the major radioactive gas in volcanic area. The study of radon concentration variations in volcanic areas has been considered as a useful tool to investigate the volcanic activity in one area. Tatun Volcano Group, where close to Taipei basin and exhibits active fumaroles and hot springs, was chosen for first time systematical study of radon gas in Hsiao-You-Keng hydrothermal area of northern Taiwan. In addition to soil CO 2 flux and gas compositions, radon concentrations in soil were measured in situ by an analogous radon sensor. The sensor is developed to separate the electronics from the measurement chamber, which contains the detector and the preamplifier completely covered by epoxy, and can be used in the aggressive environment. Combined with gas composition and helium isotopic data, we can conclude that the radon gas is mainly carried by the volcanic gases. Therefore, it is considered as a good proxy for monitoring the magma activity in this area. A monitoring station was newly setup for such purpose and the preliminary monitoring data will be presented in this study.

Soil 222 Rn concentrations have been monitored during the 2009 autumn and Spring 2010 rainy periods, in an alluvial soil, resting on a pyroclastic substrate (locally reworked), in the Pietramelara Plain, in Southern Italy. The dry soil diurnal oscillations detected at the site in August 2009 have been found to be present also during the rainy periods of the year, provided, however, that soil moisture conditions are not affected by rainfall infiltration or post storm gravity-driven percolation in the soil depth interval considered. With significant rainfall, the characteristic dry soil diurnal cycle is altered. This rainfall-induced perturbation produces a spike-like signal featuring a sharp rise, with commencement of precipitation, then followed, with persistent and significant rainfall, by an equally sharp drop to very low levels. Both the sharp rise, resulting from capping, and the sharp drop (wash-out), resulting from infiltration, have been found to follow not previously reported second-order trends tied to cumulative rainfall, with very high statistical significance (r 2 [ 0.97 for the sharp rise and r 2 [ 0.95 for the sharp drop). Furthermore, the sharp drop appears to be tied to wetting front migration of 222 Rn-free, or 222 Rn-poor, rainwater and to commence when it reaches the soil probe depth, effectively flushing and transferring radon to lower levels of the profile, thus validating previous studies. Low rainfall events (\1-2 mm), however, do not appear to alter significantly the dry soil diurnal cycle. Post rainstorm recovery of soil 222 Rn concentrations, in the immediate aftermath of significant rainfall, appears to be very slow and limited. The spike-like pattern induced by rainstorm events poses significant questions as to the interpretation of soil 222 Rn concentration time series data in geophysical precursor studies. Likewise the extreme variations resulting from rainfall, and likely affected by rainfall duration, intensity, frequency and spatial variability, pose significant implications in environmental monitoring studies aimed at characterising representative soil 222 Rn concentration levels for the wet season.

Radon has been determined in soil, groundwater, and air in Mexico, both indoors and outdoors, as part of geophysical studies and to estimate effective doses as a result of radon exposure. Detection of radon has mainly been performed with solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) and, occasionally, with active detection devices based on silicon detectors or ionization chambers. The liquid scintillation technique, also, has been used for determination of radon in groundwater. The adjusted geometric mean indoor radon concentration (74 Bq m-3) in urban developments, for example Mexico City, is higher than the worldwide median concentration of radon in dwellings. In some regions, particularly hilly regions of Mexico where air pollution is high, radon concentrations are higher than action levels and the effective dose for the general population has increased. Higher soil radon levels have been found in the uranium mining areas in the northern part of the country. Groundwater radon levels are, in general, low. Soil-air radon contributing to indoor atmospheres and air pollution is the main source of increased exposure of the population.
