“…Gas geochemistry surveys have been widely applied in the geosciences for decades (see recent reviews of Yang, 2008). Among them, trace gases, like radon and helium, are considered to be useful tools which have been applied to study/monitor seismic activities (e.g., Tsunogai and Wakita, 1995;Italiano et al, 2001;Chyi et al, 2005Chyi et al, , 2010Chyi et al, , 2011Walia et al, 2005b;Yang et al, 2005bYang et al, , 2006Laskar et al, 2011;Montazeri et al, 2011;Woith et al, 2011), study/monitor volcanic activities (e.g., Sano et al, 1984;Segovia et al, 1997Segovia et al, , 1999Segovia et al, , 2001Segovia et al, , 2003Immè et al, 2006a, b), discover and delineate faults (e.g., Toutain and Baubron, 1999;Fu et al, 2005Fu et al, , 2008Fu et al, , 2009Walia et al, 2005aHong et al, 2010), and as indicator for fluid sources (e.g., Van Soest et al, 2002;Yang et al, 2003a;Jaffe et al, 2004;Chen et al, 2005).…”

“…concentration variations in volcanic areas has been considered as a useful tool to investigate the volcanic activity in one area (Seidel et al, 1988;Segovia et al, 1997Segovia et al, , 1999Segovia et al, , 2001Segovia et al, , 2003Immè et al, 2006a, b;Neri et al, 2006Neri et al, , 2007Cigolini et al, 2009;Moreno et al, 2009;Viveiros et al, 2009).…”

“…This consists essentially in a soil gas permeability reduction effect originating from rainfallinduced increases in soil moisture. The effect inhibits 222 Rn exhalation and brings about an overall progressive tendency towards an increase in measured 222 Rn concentrations, particularly evident in long-term seasonal trends (Segovia et al 2001;De Francesco et al 2010a). Likewise, significant rainfall-induced effects have also been detected in the shallow aquifer (De Francesco et al 2010b;Tommasone Pascale et al 2011).…”

“…Radon-in-soil surveys in Mexico were initiated in 1974 in the northern uranium mining region for uranium prospecting (Aguilar, 1981). Being a country with several active volcanoes and located in a strong seismic subduction zone, radon-in-soil-gas mapping has been systematically performed since 1981, to correlate temporal fluctuations of soil radon emanation with local telluric behavior (De la Cruz-Reyna, Mena, Segovia, Chalet, & Monnin, 1985;Segovia et al, 1989, Segovia, Mena, & Tamez, 1993, Segovia et al, 1999b, Segovia, Valdes, Peñ a, Mena, & Tamez, 2001. The radon records also include data from Mexico City (Segovia, Peñ a, & Tamez, 1991), the geothermal field of Los Azufres located in the North-East of the State of Michoacan (Segovia et al, 1989) and the mining zone of Zacatecas (Segovia, Peñ a, Mireles, Dá vila, & Quirino, 1993).…”
