Soil Quality Effects on Chenopodium album Flavonoid Content and Antioxidant Potential

Abstract: Antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content and flavonoid glycosides profile were compared in C.album samples grown in intensively cultivated (IC) and nondisturbed (ND) soils to evaluate differences in their nutraceutical potential. Petroleum ether, methanol, and aqueous extracts were sequentially obtained from C. album dried samples. Methanol crude extract exhibited the highest antioxidant potential and phenolic content, which were significantly enhanced by soil deterioration. This feature was enhanced in it… Show more

“…In plants, flavonoids frequently serve as pigments to attract pollinators and/or herbivores, and as a chemical defense against insects or plant pathogens . Some flavonoids have human health benefits, for example, quercetin and kaempferol glucoside derivatives, which show antioxidant activity . In addition, significant roles in allelopathy have been reported for flavonoids in recent years.…”

“…Free radicals are molecule with one single electron in the outer orbit such as anion superoxide (O2 -), radicalhidroxyle (OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that are so unstable and reactive. They can trigger damage in cell components like DNA, lipid, protein and carbohydrate that cause biological disorders, among which are arterosclerosis, cancer, diabetes and other degenerative diseases (Chludil et al 2008). Vitamin C and E as antioxidant can cease free radicals chain reaction.…”
