Soil pH as a Phenotype Determinant in Humans: Proposing a Scientific Hypothesis

Abstract: Plant growth, habitat of various microorganisms, sustenance conditions for the fauna and flora, are determined by the quality of soil. However, alteration in the properties of soil leads to various deficiencies/diseases in plants and thereby affects dependent fauna. The alkalinity and acidity of the soil refer to the change in pH value of the soil. In the North East India, most of the soils lack calcium (Ca) and are acidic. Therefore, majority of the fauna and flora have lower availability of Ca due to leachin… Show more

“…Fe toxicity is found under hypoxic conditions in Northeast India and in some parts of Africa. Northeast India has high potential for cultivation of diverse lowland rice varieties, however, its soils are strongly acidic with pH ranges from 5.5 to 5.1 (Barthakur, 2018). In this region, bio-available Fe is abundant leading to Fe toxicity as a major constraint affecting the annual yield (Baruah, Das, & Das, 2007).…”

“…pH is one of the important chemical property of soil that regulates the normal growth of plants. Soil in North Eastern states of India is characterized by low pH which when culminates with high concentrationof Al, restricts plant growth and development due to the formation of complexes with intracellular substances and hence suppressing the plant metabolism (1). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is induced by Al toxicity at low pH in plants and it is accompanied with the increase of lipid peroxidation.…”
