Soil organic and inorganic carbon contents of landscape units in Belgium derived using data from 1950 to 1970

Abstract: Abstract. Belgium's soil survey data collected between 1950 and 1970 (pre‐Kyoto Protocol) contain more than 13 000 geo‐referenced soil profile descriptions, which allow the computation of a spatially distributed baseline carbon content for incremental soil depths, based on soil/land‐use combinations (landscape units) and multiple matching soil profile observations. The results show that the soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIOC) contents of many landscape units do not differ significantly.… Show more

“…Values reported for SOC stocks in the O-horizon of boreal and temperate forests range from 0.8 to 8.3 kg C m -2 , with most values in the range 1-4 kg C m -2 (Vogt et al 1986, Grigal and Ohmann 1992, Homann et al 1995, Simmons et al 1996, Kulmatiski et al 2004, Lettens et al 2004.…”

“…For the French forest soils, values of 79 tC/ha were obtained, and only 44 tC/ha in Belgian broadleaf forests [32] while the stocks in Fougères were about 142 tC/ha. The forest of Fougères has been exploited as forest (for wood and hunting) for several centuries and so it has very deep loamy soils with carbon levels and densities which are higher than elsewhere.…”

“…Regional soil surveys provide a considerable amount of data based on composite sampling (e.g. Arrouays et al, 2001;Coomes et al, 2002;Tremblay et al, 2002;Jones et al, 2005;Lettens et al, 2004), and this could be utilized in assessing changes after re-measuring the same plots. In addition, it is common in forest soil surveys that soil samples cannot be collected at every planned point because of natural or other obstacles.…”
