We investigated the effects of compost (CM), made from poultry and cattle manure with spent mushroom substrate, plus chemical fertilizers (CFs) on soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) fractions in silty loam soil of the Loess Plateau. Eight fertilizer practices were applied in a 7‐year‐old ‘Red Fuji’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchard for 360 days. Compared to CM alone, CM–CFs decreased slightly soil total organic C but increased total N by 4.3–11.6%. Notably, CM–CFs increased soil microbial biomass C (MBC) by 2.7–26.5% and microbial biomass N (MBN) by 7–13.7%. Soil water‐soluble carbon (WSC) was increased by 20.7% and 19.2% when 2% CM plus N and phosphorus (P) (2%M–NP) and 4% CM plus N and P (4%M–NP) were applied, respectively. Whereas 0.5% CM plus N and P (0.5%M–NP) increased WSC by 9.3% on day 30 but decreased it by 7.2% from 30–360 days. Hot water‐soluble C increased by 13.1–14.6% from 0–180 day, but thereafter, the effect disappeared. Compared to CFs, CM–CFs increased MBN by 35.1–115.6%, and increased alkali‐hydrolyzable‐N by 3.5–55.8% over 180–360 days of incubation. Additionally, CM–CFs promoted N mineralization, increasing NH4‐N and NO3‐N contents. Based on the changes in C and N fractions and available nutrients, 2%M–NP (45 t/ha of CM plus 450 kg/ha of N and 157.5 kg/ha of P) may be the optimal fertilizer strategy for stimulating soil microbial growth and activity, and enhancing nutrient cycling for apple growth.

Tillage intensities largely affect soil compaction dynamics in agro-ecosystems. However, the contribution of tillage intensities on compaction changes in underground peanut (Arachis hypogaea) fields has not been quantified. We thus aimed to better understand the role of soil tillage intensities in mitigation of compaction stress for peanuts. Using three field tillage experiments in major Chinese peanut producing areas, we quantified the effects of (1) no tillage, (2) shallow (20 cm) plowing, (3) deep (30 cm) plowing and (4) deep (30 cm) loosening on changes in soil bulk density at 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm and 20–30 cm depths, roots and pods growth, and nutrient accumulation. Results showed that tillage management effectively mitigated soil compaction stress for peanut growth and production. Greater beneficial improvement for the underground growth of roots and pods, and N accumulation ranked as deep plowing > shallow plowing and deep loosening. Respective increases of 7.5% and 4.6% in root biomass productions and peanut yields were obtained when soil bulk density was decreased by 0.1 g cm−3. Our results suggest that the mitigation of soil compaction stress by deep plowing could be a key tillage strategy for increasing peanut yields in the field.

Soil organic nitrogen (SON) and its mineralization are among the most critical factors that affect soil N availability. However, it is unclear how crop residue return and chemical N fertilization affect soil N availability by altering SON and its mineralization. Therefore, we studied the SON pools, SON mineralization, and related soil properties and enzymes activities in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Valley in China with stand ages of 7‐year N (0, 75, 150, and 300 kg N ha−1) fertilization and 4‐year barley‐cotton residue return. Regardless of residue retention or removal, the contents of total SON and its fractions (ammonium N, amino acid N, amino sugar N, and unidentified N) increased consistently with the increasing of N input, while SON mineralization, microbial biomass N content, urease and protease activities showed a curvilinear response that was highest at N rate of 150 kg N ha−1. Crop residue returning significantly increased SON content under 75 and 150 kg N ha−1, mostly due to the increase of amino acids N. Other variables, such as SON mineralization, microorganism, and enzymes, were also enhanced by residue returning, and the largest increases were observed at 150 kg N ha−1. In addition, our result also show that excessive N input (300 kg N ha−1) would reduce soil N availability by mainly suppressing microbial N processes. We concluded that crop residue combined with appropriate N has a great potential to improve soil N availability by mainly improving amino acid N content and SON mineralization.
