Humic-based products (HPs) are carbon-rich organic amendments in the forms of extracted humic substances from manure, compost, and raw and extracted forms of lignites, coals and peats. HPs are widely used in agriculture and have beneficial effects on plants. While the agronomic benefits of HPs have been widely reported, information on their impact on the soil microbial community composition and functions is lacking, despite claims made by companies of humic substances as biostimulants. In this review, we explored published research on microbial responses with HPs application in an agronomic context. Although research data are sparse, current results suggest indirect impacts of HPs on microbial community composition and activities. HPs application changes the physico-chemical properties of the soil and influence root exudation, which in turn impact the microbial structure and function of the soil and rhizosphere. Application of HPs to the soil as biostimulants seemed to favor plant/soil beneficial bacterial community composition. HPs impacts on microbial activities that influence soil biogeochemical functioning remain unclear; existing data are also inconsistent and contradictory. The structural properties of HPs caused inconsistencies in their reported impacts on soil properties and plants. The sources of HPs and forms (whether extracted or raw), soil type, geographic location, crop species, and management strategies, among others, affect microbial communities affecting HPs efficacy as biostimulants. A more holistic approach to research encompassing multiple influential factors and leveraging the next-generation sequencing technology is needed to unravel the impacts of HPs on the soil microbiome. Addressing these knowledge gaps facilitates sustainable and efficient use of HPs as organic agricultural amendments reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.

Influence of host genotype in establishing root associated microbiome of indica rice cultivars for plant growth promotion

Rice plants display a unique root ecosystem comprising oxic-anoxic zones, harboring a plethora of metabolic interactions mediated by its root microbiome. Since agricultural land is limited, an increase in rice production will rely on novel methods of yield enhancement. The nascent concept of tailoring plant phenotype through the intervention of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) is inspired by the genetics and ecology of core rhizobiome. In this direction, we have studied structural and functional variations in the root microbiome of 10 indica rice varieties. The studies on α and β-diversity indices of rhizospheric root microbiome with the host genotypes revealed variations in the structuring of root microbiome as well as a strong association with the host genotypes. Biomarker discovery, using machine learning, highlighted members of class Anaerolineae, α-Proteobacteria, and bacterial genera like Desulfobacteria, Ca. Entotheonella, Algoriphagus, etc. as the most important features of indica rice microbiota having a role in improving the plant’s fitness. Metabolically, rice rhizobiomes showed an abundance of genes related to sulfur oxidation and reduction, biofilm production, nitrogen fixation, denitrification, and phosphorus metabolism. This comparative study of rhizobiomes has outlined the taxonomic composition and functional diversification of rice rhizobiome, laying the foundation for the development of next-generation microbiome-based technologies for yield enhancement in rice and other crops.

Global change is affecting soil biodiversity and functioning across all terrestrial ecosystems. Still, much is unknown about how soil biodiversity and function will change in the future in response to simultaneous alterations in climate and land use, as well as other environmental drivers. It is crucial to understand the direct, indirect and interactive effects of global change drivers on soil communities and ecosystems across environmental contexts, not only today but also in the near future. This is particularly relevant for international efforts to tackle climate change like the Paris Agreement, and considering the failure to achieve the 2020 biodiversity targets, especially the target of halting soil degradation. Here, we outline the main frontiers related to soil ecology that were presented and discussed at the thematic sessions of the World Biodiversity Forum 2022 in Davos, Switzerland. We highlight multiple frontiers of knowledge associated with data integration, causal inference, soil biodiversity and function scenarios, critical soil biodiversity facets, underrepresented drivers, global collaboration, knowledge application and transdisciplinarity, as well as policy and public communication. These identified research priorities are not only of immediate interest to the scientific community but may also be considered in research priority programmes and calls for funding.
