Soil microbiomes and one health

Abstract: The concept of one health highlights that human health is not isolated but connected to the health of animals, plants and environments. In this Review, we demonstrate that soils are a cornerstone of one health and serve as a source and reservoir of pathogens, beneficial microorganisms and the overall microbial diversity in a wide range of organisms and ecosystems. We list more than 40 soil microbiome functions that either directly or indirectly contribute to soil, plant, animal and human health. We identify mi… Show more

“…Up to now, data are scarce, and results are inconclusive on how HPs impact the soil. Specifically, it remains unknown how HPs and their different forms and sources affect the soil pH (Ampong et al, 2022), which is a key predictor of microbial structure and composition at field and continental scales (Lauber et al, 2009;Chu et al, 2010;Banerjee and van der Heijden, 2022). For instance, the complex nature of HPs caused inconsistencies regarding whether HPs form an enzyme complex that stabilizes urease activity, or whether HPs negatively affect urease activity.…”

“…Soil microbial communities act in synchrony to maintain soil fertility, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, detoxification, and carbon sequestration ( Banerjee and van der Heijden, 2022 ). Plant root exudates consist of various signaling molecules, dissolved organic matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc., which tend to attract diverse groups of microbial communities.…”

“…In line with the saying related to the health of the human skin ‘ The skin never forgets ’, protecting the soil as the Earth's thin skin and the biodiversity therein needs to be a top priority to protect global biodiversity. Soils are experiencing an increasing number and severity of anthropogenic stressors (FAO, ITPS, GSBI, SCBD, EC, 2020; Geisen, 2021), but represent the basis for human nutrition and health (Banerjee & van der Heijden, 2022; FAO, ITPS, GSBI, SCBD, EC, 2020; Wall et al, 2015), calling for immediate action to maintain these essential nature's contributions to people. This has been known for decades, but little has been done since then (‘ The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself ’, Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937).…”
