The semiarid region of Brazil consists of a great variety of landscapes, soils and vegetation forms, with complex interrelations. In order to better understand this interplay, we posed two questions: Are there greater pedological similarities among the different landforms of the same catena or among the same landforms from different catenas? Which soil attributes could be the most important to segregate communities of plants? We sampled soils and vegetation on different landforms in four different catenas and performed NMS (non-metric multidimensional scaling) and ANOVA (analysis of variance) to address the first question; also, we carried another NMS following GLM (general linear model regression) to answer the second question. The first NMS indicated the existence of a fertility gradient, grouping communities in relation to similar landforms, confirmed by ANOVA. The second NMS indicated the same gradient whereas the GLM showed that is controlled by aluminum saturation, sodium saturation, phosphorous and sand content. One extreme of the gradient has uplands associated with cerrado vegetation forms whereas the other extreme slopes were associated with dry forests. The lowlands associated with dry forest represent the central position of the fertility gradient. In general, soils at similar landforms showed greater pedological similarity, and their physico-chemical attributes determined the formation and structure of vegetation. This similarity across the same landform refers to the Folia Geobot comparable soil formation at each landform and soil age at landscape scale. The characteristics of the vegetation and soils in the Brazilian southern semiarid region indicated a previously wetter climate, during which deep weathered latosols (oxisols) were formed and remain as relics in the present semiarid.

Um inventário da fauna de aranhas foi realizado na Serra do Cachimbo, no Campo de Provas Brigadeiro Velloso, município de Novo Progresso, Pará. As coletas ocorreram em duas expedições, uma na estação seca (agosto e setembro de 2003) e outra na chuvosa (março e abril de 2004). Cada expedição contou com a participação de três coletores. O esforço de amostragem foi de 240 amostras, sendo 96 através de guarda-chuva entomológico e rede de varredura, 96 através de coleta manual noturna e 48 por triagem manual e extratores de Winkler. Foi comparada a diversidade de aranhas de quatro tipos de vegetação, Floresta Ombrófila Aberta, mata de galeria, áreas de Cerrado (Savana Arbórea) e de Campina. As coletas resultaram em um total de 4.990 indivíduos, dos quais 2.750 adultos. Foram identificadas 427 morfoespécies em 37 famílias, sendo as mais abundantes Theridiidae, Salticidae e Araneidae e as mais ricas em espécies Araneidae, Salticidae e Theridiidae. As espécies representadas por apenas um indivíduo somaram 40% do total e apenas duas ultrapassaram cem indivíduos. A curva de riqueza específica estimada (ACE) atingiu 614 espécies. A maior diversidade alfa (índice de Shannon-Wiener) foi encontrada em Floresta Ombrófila, seguida pela mata de galeria, Campina e Cerrado. Tais diferenças entre as vegetações podem ser explicadas devido a variações na complexidade da vegetação e na disponibilidade de microhábitats em cada fitofisionomia.

We investigated the existence of an ecotone in the species composition, diversity and vegetation structure in the transition between gallery forest and cerrado sensu stricto in central Brazil. We tested two hypotheses: 1) a ecotone can be found between gallery forest and cerrado; 2) a gradient exists in the species composition of the cerrado. We established three parallel transects of 5 m × 350 m running between gallery forest and cerrado, which were divided into subplots of 5 m × 10 m, perpendicular to the margin of the Bacaba stream in Nova Xavantina (Mato Grosso, Brazil). We identified and measured the height and diameter of individual plants in the plots with a diameter of at least 3 cm at 30 cm above the ground. We recorded 140 species, of which 26 were exclusive to the gallery forest, and 95 to the cerrado. The cerrado presented higher species richness (observed and estimated) and diversity (diversity profiles) than the gallery forest. Both hypotheses were accepted: a distinct ecotone was observed between gallery the forest and cerrado, and a pronounced gradient was found in species composition among the cerrado plots, apparently in response to the variation in soil moisture content, probably related to topography.
