The effects of different tillage systems on the properties and microbial diversity of an agricultural soil was investigated. In doing so, soil physical, chemical and biological properties were analysed in 2013-2015, on a long-term field experiment on a loamy sand at the IUNG-PIB Experimental Station in Grabów, Poland. Winter wheat was grown under two tillage treatments: conventional tillage using a mouldboard plough and traditional soil tillage equipment, and reduced tillage based on soil crushing-loosening equipment and a rigid-tine cultivator. Chopped wheat straw was used as a mulch on both treatments. Reduced tillage resulted in increased water content throughout the whole soil profile, in comparison with conventional tillage. Under reduced tillage, the content of readily dispersible clay was also reduced, and, therefore, soil stability was increased in the toplayers, compared with conventional tillage. In addition, the beneficial effects of reduced tillage were reflected in higher soil microbial activity as measured with dehydrogenases and hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate, compared with conventional tillage. Moreover, the polimerase chain reaction – denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis showed that soil under reduced till-age had greater diversity of microbial communities, compared with conventionally-tilled soil. Finally, reduced tillage increased organic matter content, stability in water and microbial diversity in the top layer of the soil.

RESUMONo sul de Minas Gerais faz-se a substituição de florestas de araucária por pastagens ou extensos plantios de eucalipto. No entanto, poucos estudos relacionam, de forma ampla, os impactos nos atributos físicos, químicos, microbianos e visuais do solo causados por esta substituição. Com esse objetivo, selecionaram-se áreas com eucalipto, araucária implantada, mata nativa e pasto implantado em Delfim Moreira, MG, no verão de 2006, de onde se retiraram amostras deformadas e indeformadas de solo para análises químicas (pH, P, K, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ , H + Al, SB, t, T, V, m e matéria orgânica), físicas (densidade do solo, densidade de partículas, índice de floculação, diâmetro médio geométrico, macro e microporosidade) e microbianas (atividade microbiana, qCO 2 , C da biomassa microbiana, relação C da biomassa/C orgânico). Com atributos visuais ligados ao solo, às plantas e aos animais, elaborou-se um indicador da qualidade visual para cada ecossistema, que se destacou pela praticidade, simplicidade e sensibilidade na discriminação das diferentes coberturas vegetais. A grande maioria dos atributos físicos e microbianos mostrou-se eficiente nas avaliações da qualidade ambiental, que revelaram grande disparidade entre a pastagem e os demais ecossistemas, e alta similaridade entre o ecossistema eucalipto com sub-bosque desenvolvido e araucária implantada.Termos de indexação: araucária, eucalipto, indicadores da qualidade do solo.

Abstract-The study was aimed at investigating the effectiveness of recovering degraded soil chemical qualities to mitigate the mysterious forest dieback in a montane forest. Soil amendments with standard compost, montane mycorrhizae, standard compost with montane mycorrhizae, and a control were used as treatments. Syzygium rotundifolium saplings were used as the indicator plant. Soil pH, EC, Soluble soil Pb, Cd and soil organic matter was compared at 0.20m soil depth. Foliar samples from "treated" saplings were tested for Pb and Cd. Contamination of soil and leaves of the saplings with Pb (p <0.001) and Cd (p<0.001) was evident. Positive correlations between soil Pb and Cd and leaf Pb and Cd were observed (p=0.001). Soil amendment with compost and montane mycorrhizae reduced the soluble Pb content (p=<0.001). Soil amendment with standard compost and montane mycorrhizae was effective in saving the saplings from Pb and Cd toxicity (p<0.001).Index Terms-Montane forest, forest dieback, soil chemical properties.
