Soil Enzyme Activity and Microbial Metabolic Function Diversity in Soda Saline–Alkali Rice Paddy Fields of Northeast China

Abstract: Western Jilin province has the most serious area of soda salinization in Northeast China, which affects and restricts the sustainable development of agriculture. The effects of physico-chemical properties of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil on soil microbial diversity and enzyme activities (polyphenol oxidase, catalase, invertase, amylase) were evaluated in typical soda saline-alkali paddy field. Community-level physiological profile (CLPP) based on Biolog-ECO plates was used to assess the functional diver… Show more

“…Soil salinization is one of the main problems causing soil degradation and has negative effects on the sustainable development of agriculture [11]. Soil salinization has become a global problem, involving more than 100 countries and regions around the world, and it is estimated that more than 8 × 10 6 km 2 of land are affected by salinization [12,13].…”

“…It acts as an important oxido-reductase system for the synthesis of humus in soil [ 51 ]. Catalase plays an important role in soil ecosystem, and it can be used as a biological activity index to evaluate the quality of a particular soil [ 52 ]. As such, studies on the variationsthat can occur insoil catalase under different farming practices is of great significance if we are to understand the rational utilization of fertilizers, soil resources, and the construction of sustainable soil ecosystems.…”

“…Critical factors affecting microbes and their enzyme activities include the amount and type of Po [120], interactions with soil constituents, pH, temperature, and the concentrations of enzyme and product [121]. In addition, because Po adsorbs rapidly and strongly onto soil particles, the binding processes involved also play a crucial role in the activity of rhizosphere microbiomes [122,123]. To date, there are relatively few studies that explore the enzymatic hydrolysis of adsorbed Po.…”
