In Mediterranean ecosystems, some natural areas are exposed to severe anthropogenic impact. Especially in summer, the considerable number of tourists visiting such areas, often with vehicles, causes deposition of dust over the vegetation due to formation of powder clouds, also favoured by wind erosion, high temperature, low precipitation and incoherent soil structure. The main aim of this study was to analyse whether the deposition of dust can induce changes in leaf anatomical functional traits and in the efficiency of photosynthetic apparatus in Centranthus ruber, a species widespread in Mediterranean ecosystems.• Leaf morpho-functional traits were quantified in plants growing at sites characterised by high (HD) and low (LD) dust deposition, in periods with high anthropogenic impact. Analyses included quantification of chlorophyll fluorescence emission parameters, photosynthetic pigment concentration as well as stomatal size and frequency, leaf lamina thickness, quantification of intercellular spaces and phenolics in the mesophyll through microscopy.• The overall analysis suggested that the different conditions of dust deposition induced different adjustment of morpho-functional traits in leaves of C. ruber. High dust deposition shielded the leaf lamina, protecting the photosynthetic apparatus from excess light and favoured plant photochemical efficiency. Leaves exposed to low dust deposition showed higher accumulation of phenolic compounds, protecting chloroplast membranes and characterised by high thermal dissipation of excess light.• Such adaptive phenomena can affect vegetation dynamics due to possible different species-specific plant responses, resulting in different plant competitiveness under the limiting conditions of Mediterranean environments.Plant Biology 22 (Suppl. 1) (2020) 93-102

Trace elements play an essential role in the normal metabolism and physiological functions of living beings. The distribution and concentration of trace elements in the environment results from both anthropogenic and natural origins; this chapter will focus on volcanism as one of the major natural sources of trace elements. In volcanic areas, the emissions and deposits of volcanogenic elements are key factors for geochemical mobility of trace elements and their distribution in the environment and, their effects on animals and human health. Volcanic areas have been associated with increased incidence of several diseases, such as fluorosis or even some types of cancer, leveraging the studies on the potential of this natural phenomenon as a promoter of diseases. As the Azores Archipelago is a volcanic area, with several manifestations of active volcanism, this region presents itself as an ideal study scenario for a multidisciplinary approach on environmental health problems, such as the exposure to toxic and/or deficient levels of trace elements. This chapter will present an integrated approach, describing the occurrence, the monitoring of trace elements and their characterization, the biological role in human body, and the human biomonitoring and health risk assessment, using case studies as examples.

Although the application of agro-industrial effluents on soil is an important practice of environmental management in the industry, this practice can cause impacts on soil microbiology due to the nutrient load and other components present in this waste. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate and select relevant articles, involving studies of factors that may influence the amount of biomass in the soil, comparing methodology and progress in studies with this theme. For this, articles indexed in three electronic databases were used: Web of Science, Scopus and Scielo. From these databases, 18 articles related to the topic were selected, all published between 2005 and 2018. For the total of selected scientific studies, 11 have methodologies related to the scope of the study and 7 reinforce the theoretical basis in the elaboration and complementation of the study. It was observed that the main articles were published in the English language, mainly in studies related to the Scopus and Web of Science bases and the most recurrent methods were titrimetric and spectrophotogrammetric methods. It is also concluded that the majority of the studies analyzed relate to microbial biomass alteration of the soil under influence of effluent disposal, as well as a variation of these communities as a function of soil cover.
