Soil chemical attributes in areas under conversion from forest to pasture in southern Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: The south of the Brazilian Amazon is one of the largest cattle-producing regions in Brazil, however, most of the pastures are in low fertility soils. Thus, cattle breeders compensate for the low production of pastures, increasing the size of the areas, generating more deforestation and burning. These practices increase the chemical degradation process of Amazonian soils, making them increasingly infertile when improperly managed. With this, the objective of the work was to evaluate the impacts caused in the ch… Show more

“…Thus, the variables in the same quadrant (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) and closer together in the PCA scatter plot are better correlated. Likewise, scores assigned to samples that are close together and in the same quadrant are related to the variables in that quadrant (Lima et al 2022).…”

“…use beetles as dispersing agents, they only complete their life cycle in the soil or resources (e.g., dung, carrion) (Gulvik, 2007) naturally present in Restinga. Since that the transformation of forests into anthropized systems can alter soil properties and cause, for example, decreased fertility (de Lima et al., 2022), these changes in soil characteristics, in addition to changes in native vegetation, can cause population declines for some species of soil mites (Bedano et al., 2011). Thus, the habitat quality and its characteristics are important factors that can interfere with the abundance of mites and, consequently, with the number of species capable of associating with insects (Ewers et al., 2013; Gibbs & Stanton, 2001).…”

“…No entanto, embora a região apresente altos índices produtivos relacionados às atividades pecuárias, há carência de dados sobre a área ocupada por pastagens, bem como o estado de conservação das mesmas, uma vez que o sistema de criação mais adotado na região é o extensivo (Lima et al 2022b).…”
