Soil as part of the Earth system

Abstract: The idea that soil or the pedosphere is connected to the other terrestrial spheres dates back at least to 1880. Some 26 years later, the interdependency of the terrestrial spheres was established, but a fully integrative approach to addressing the interdependence of the biosphere, pedosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and toposphere did not emerge until the advent of Earth Systems Science during the 1980s. A significant development within the Earth Systems approach was a re-evaluation of the pedosphe… Show more

“…Recently, Huggett has expanded his concept of the pedosphere to include the definitions of Dokuchaev and Vernadsky, though he continues to talk about the interactions between life and soil [16]. However, this does not account for the soil itself being a naturally bio-inert, which is to say living, body.…”

“… 20 This intricate interplay between the geosphere and water encompasses 2 distinct facets. 21 On one hand, the geosphere can endure substantial harm from water contamination, leading to the generation of polluted sediments, including those laden with heavy metals. 21 Conversely, the geosphere itself can occasionally serve as a source of water pollution, such as through acidification resulting from exposed metal sulphides or the improper disposal of synthetic compounds in landfills.…”

“…An active analysis of the problems of modeling linear and sheet erosion is necessary due to the fact that the surface component of the hydrological cycle is organized mainly within the framework of drainage networks [41]. New opportunities to study and parameterize land use conditions and watershed regimes arise when using GIS technologies [42][43][44] and neurotechnologies [45].…”
