The maximum biomass yield of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) usually is achieved with one seasonal autumn harvest. However, information is limited on the influences of winter harvesting on annual biomass yield and on quality parameters impacting conversion into bioethanol. Accordingly, the objectives of this study were to assess: (i) yield of standing field cured biomass at monthly intervals through winter, (ii) year‐round elemental composition of biomass, and (iii) associated year‐round soil nutrient status. An unfertilized ‘Kanlow’ switchgrass planting established in 1998 was used for this study conducted from November 2007 to October 2010. The experimental treatment was monthly harvest from November to the following March and year‐round monthly sampling of biomass (except April) and soil for chemical analyses. The 3‐yr mean dry matter yield of winter harvests was 5.94Mg ha−1, ranging from 3.88 Mg ha−1 in the winter of 2007–2008 to 7.55 Mg ha−1 in 2009–2010. Monthly biomass yield differences were significant in Years 1 and 3 but not in Year 2. Concentrations of biomass elements and soil nutrients changed with various degrees over the 3 yr. Concentrations of ash, cell wall components, and mineral nutrients, except P, K, and S, did not change appreciably across winter months. Early winter harvests resulted in less yield loss compared to late winter harvests. These findings will be valuable in harvest management for switchgrass biomass production.

This research investigated soil microbial abundances affected by different ground management systems in establishing apple (Malus domestica cv. Idared, M9) orchards in Ontario, Canada. Four treatments, including forest garden systems with and without compost (FGSC and FGS), and grass understory systems with and without compost (GC and G), were assessed over two establishment years for gene copy abundance of soil arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, total fungi and total bacteria using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions. Time had a greater effect on all three soil microbial abundances, with total bacterial and AM fungi decreasing and total fungal abundance increasing from spring 2013 to fall 2014. The changes were greatest between the sampling dates of fall 2013 and spring 2014, which is 1 yr after the establishment of the experimental apple plots. There were no significant differences in soil microbial abundances between treatments at any specific sampling date. Apple tree trunk circumference was greatest for FGSC and FGS after 2 yr, but no significant differences in GC and G treatments. In the last sampling period, fall 2014, FGSC plots had significantly greater trunk circumferences compared with G plots. Soil chemical properties neither changed over the 2 yr, nor did they differ between treatments at any one sampling time. We conclude that the applebased FGS treatments can benefit apple tree growth and there is a basis for future research to explore specific plantplant, plant-microbe and microbe-microbe relations in FGSs.

Nutrient Dynamics in Switchgrass as a Function of Time

There are wide variations in fertilizer recommendations for switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) as biofuel feedstock or forage. Inconsistent yield responses to fertilization are common. Nutrient translocation, from aboveground leaves and stems to belowground roots, is a contributor to variable, and sometimes the absence of, fertilizer response. A field study evaluated how major nutrients are cycled within switchgrass during the growing season. Aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) biomasses were harvested and analyzed separately for yield (AG) and nutrient concentrations (AG and BG). Maximum yields were 26.3 (2008), 17.5 (2009) and 29.3 (2010) Mg ha−1 until senescence. In all years, the N concentration of the AG biomass decreased as the season progressed (p < 0.0001). The belowground biomass N concentration increased over time in 2008 and 2010 (p < 0.05). Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) displayed similar trends to nitrogen concentration. Temporal changes of other nutrients in the AG and BG biomass concentrations were inconsistent and varied compared with N. The dynamics of the macronutrients suggested translocation from AG to BG as the switchgrass matured. Nutrients stored in roots can be beneficial for regrowth in the following growing season, which may reduce response to fertilizers. A greater understanding of nutrient cycling and harvest timing is needed to better manage different switchgrass production systems.
