Software for hepatic vessel classification: feasibility study for virtual surgery

Abstract: The software provides a correct and detailed reconstruction even where pathologies have caused morphological and geometrical variations in the vessels. The time required for the entire procedure is compatible with clinical requirements, providing an efficient tool for diagnosis and surgical planning.

“…Particularly, the OsiriX platform was very simple and fast. In addition, the OsiriX producers released the source code, enabling many users to implement tailored plug-ins, such as the ones written by Vides et al [23]. Table 2 shows a detailed description of the import and export of data, the kind of support provided by the producers and by the community and the machines in which the two chosen solutions run.…”

“…The next generation of nephrologists and surgeons will likely base their decision regarding treatment options by evaluating information obtained through the collection and analysis of big data. Furthermore, the role of virtual surgery to plan and/or evaluate risks related to invasive treatment options will become more and more relevant in complex cases [14,15].…”

“…If t is too small, no node is able to meet the condition 2, and therefore the method can't distinguish HV from HPV. If t is too large, there will be two cases to be considered: one is that the vascular system is not satisfied with the Information 1 caused by pathologies, for instance, a typical phenomenon is known as "post-stenotic dilatation" [4]. In this case, some HV nodes may be mistaken for HPV nodes.…”

“…In this method, manual operations are needed when the automatic vessel separation does not succeed completely. Moreover, A. Sboarina [4] proposed a method for classification of the hepatic and portal systems, which overcomes abnormalities introduced by pathologies. However, this method is time consuming, requiring more than 15 minutes for schematization and classification of branches.…”
