Software for enhanced video capsule endoscopy: challenges for essential progress

Abstract: Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) has revolutionized the diagnostic work-up in the field of small bowel diseases. Furthermore, VCE has the potential to become the leading screening technique for the entire gastrointestinal tract. Computational methods that can be implemented in software can enhance the diagnostic yield of VCE both in terms of efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. Since the appearance of the first capsule endoscope in clinical practice in 2001, information technology (IT) research groups have propose… Show more

“…Recent software developments are moving towards computer-aided diagnostic systems, aiming to increase diagnostic yield, reduce inter-observer variability and ultimately make the process of capsule endoscopy reading more efficient (74). Some of these have been trialled in other forms of endoscopy, including upper GI tract endoscopy for Barrett's oesophagus (75), and small-bowel capsule endoscopy (76)(77)(78)(79).…”

“…Here, the single image (instead of the complete WCE video footage) has been analyzed. The author [11] has reviewed some current CAD methods employed in enhanced video capsule endoscopy. Various hardware and software problems have been highlighted in a review article [12] for detecting lesions in the small bowel.…”

“…After the invention of the endoscope, it is possible to generate color images directly inside the human body. In 2000, capsule endoscopy (CE) [4] was introduced, and it has been a useful tool for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract, especially for the screening of small-bowel diseases [5,6]. However, endoscopic diagnosis is time consuming due to the great amount of the video data and low contrast image quality.…”

“…Nowadays, signal processing [1][2][3] and image processing [4][5][6] get more and more attention. Amongst them, medical image processing has been widely researched.…”
