Traffic microsimulation has a functional role in understanding the traffic performance on the road network. This study originated with intent to understand traffic microsimulation and its use in modeling connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). Initially, the paper focuses on understanding the evolution of traffic microsimulation and on examining the various commercial and open-source simulation platforms available and their importance in traffic microsimulation studies. Following this, current autonomous vehicle (AV) microsimulation strategies are reviewed. From the review analysis, it is observed that AVs are modeled in traffic microsimulation with two sets of strategies. In the first set, the inbuilt models are used to replicate the driving behavior of AVs by adapting the models’ parameters. In the second strategy, AV behavior is programmed with the help of externalities (e.g., Application Programming Interface (API)). Studies simulating AVs with inbuilt models used mostly VISSIM compared to other microsimulation platforms. In addition, the studies are heavily focused on AVs’ penetration rate impact on traffic flow characteristics and traffic safety. On the other hand, studies which simulated AVs with externalities focused on the communication aspects for traffic management. Finally, the cosimulation strategies for simulating the CAVs are explored, and the ongoing research attempts are discussed. The present study identifies the limitations of present CAV microsimulation studies and proposes prospects and improvements in modeling AVs in traffic microsimulation.

The parameters of a transportation simulation model need to pass through a careful calibration process to ensure that the model’s output is as close as possible to the actual system. Owing to the computationally expensive and black-box nature of a simulation model, there is a need for robust and efficient calibration algorithms. This paper proposes a Bayesian optimization framework for the high-dimensional calibration problem of transportation simulation models. Bayesian optimization uses acquisition functions to determine more promising values for future evaluation, instead of relying on local gradient approximations. It guarantees convergence to the global optimum with a reduced number of evaluations, therefore is very computationally efficient. The proposed algorithm is applied to the calibration of a simulation network coded in simulation of urban mobility (SUMO), an open-source microscopic transportation simulation platform, and compared with a well-known method named simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). To assess the calibration accuracy, speed distributions obtained from the two models calibrated using these two different methods are compared with the observation. For both the Bayesian optimization and SPSA results, the simulated and observed distributions are validated to be from the same distribution at a 95% confidence level for multiple sensor locations. Thus, the calibration accuracy of the two approaches are both acceptable for a stochastic transportation simulation model. However, Bayesian optimization shows a better convergence and a higher computational efficiency than SPSA. In addition, the comparative results of multiple implementations validate its robustness for a noisy objective function, unlike SPSA which may sometimes get stuck in a local optimum and fail to converge in a global solution.

The development of Jogja Outer Ring Road (JORR) has been issued by the government as one of possible alternatives to deal with traffic jams. The ring road has occupied the existing road with an extension of 7 meters to seize 14 meters. In the future, ring road will pass through 22 districts in 3 regencies. In this study, there were 4 main streets, i.e. Solo-Jogja street, Kaliurang St, Magelang St, and Palagan Tentara Pelajar St, set as the objects of comparison to the existence of JORR, which was analyzed three probabilities, namely 1) without JORR, 2) JORR of government route, and 3) actualized JORR with alternative route. As a result, V/C ratio of four surround roads with JORR were better. Additionally, with alternate JORR the result was much better until 5 more times. In the opposite, there were 3 roads surrounds that had more performance than the existence of JORR. Based on this study, the V/C ratio of Solo-Jogja St in front of the eastern part of Kalasan district as the north part, it decreased for about 8.79% if JORR was actualized and 60.78% if JORR was actualized with alternate road. At the western part, there was increased performance of 6.55% if JORR was actualized and 49.42% if JORR was actualized with alternate road. At southern part, there was raised performance around 16.25% if JORR was actualized and 5.27% if JORR was actualized with alternate road.
