Software for calculating blood lactate endurance markers

Abstract: Blood lactate markers are used as summary measures of the underlying model of an athlete's blood lactate response to increasing work rate. Exercise physiologists use these endurance markers, typically corresponding to a work rate in the region of high curvature in the lactate curve, to predict and compare endurance ability. A short theoretical background of the commonly used markers is given and algorithms provided for their calculation. To date, no free software exists that allows the sports scientist to calc… Show more

“…The subject's velocity at V ・ O2max (vV ・ O2max) was calculated by substituting the V ・ O2max into the velocity-V ・ O2 regression equation. The velocity at the LT (vLT) was determined using the lactate threshold decision method (Lactate-E) by Newell et al 7) . The LT intensity (LTI) was determined from vLT and vV ・ O2max.…”

“…Whole blood samples were immediately analyzed in duplicate for lactate concentration using an automated analyzer (YSI 2300 STAT, Yellow Springs, OH). The LT was defined as the first workload that elicited a Ͼ1 mM increase in venous blood lactate concentration (23) and was calculated using Lactate-E version 2.0 software (66). The W peak was determined as previously described (46).…”

“…8 Of these markers, the D2L max was more reproducible for 4 min stages, and similar reproducibility was seen between D2L max , the LT and log-log LT for 8 min stages.…”

“…7 To characterise a curvilinear blood lactate response, various endurance markers and single summary statistics have been proposed. 8 Given the ease with which lactate can be measured, it is important to recognise the associated measurement error for a particular marker and how this influences the lactateworkload relationship for incremental exercise.…”
