Software-Defined Networking-Enabled Heterogeneous Wireless Networks and Applications Convergence

Abstract: A software-defined networking (SDN) architecture is capable of integrating all radio frequency and optical wireless small cell networks (e.g. fifth generation (5G), long-term evolution (LTE) femtocell, wireless fidelity (WiFi), light fidelity (LiFi)) in one network domain. This paper considers a SDN-enabled heterogeneous network (HetNet) comprised of LiFi, LTE femtocell and WiFi access points (APs). The HetNet control plane maintains the state of the network topology and wireless resources, which can support t… Show more

“…It provides network services, including operational mobility and functional cost reduction. This technology makes a programmable interface in the network as a software-defined network [384] by isolating the decisions and behavior of the network using the forwarding infrastructure controller, which means this network has been decoupled into the control and data plane. It ensures the enhancement of the security, availability, and stability of network services.…”

“…Research conducted in reference [36] provides a solution that combines non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with a successive interference cancellation (SIC) approach to achieve interference avoidance. The study in reference [41] discusses on the network optimization through traffic engineering. Li-Fi is not able to provide an internet connection Kinetik: Game Technology, Information System, Computer Network, Computing, Electronics, and Control 268 when there is no light source.…”

“…A study in [40] reports the author's work in Li-Fi implementation, with the results being insufficient when this system is deployed outdoors, either in sunlight or under other conditions. However, there is a drawback for this system: it is quite difficult for SDN applications to provide the guaranteed, reliable, and stable services to the wireless user equipment [41]. The work in [50] presents comprehensive practical implementations, and measurements over practical setups are required to evaluate performance in real-world scenarios.…”

“…Several solutions have been proposed to address the issue of the allocation of E2E resources [17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. However, they depend on the traditional and manual configuration of the control plane.…”
