Soft tissue metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer diagnosed by 18F FDG PET-CT

Abstract: SUMMARYDistant metastases of differentiated thyroid cancer are unusual; lung and bones are the most frequently affected sites. Soft tissue metastases (STM) are extremely rare. We describe two cases of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer metastasizing to soft tissues. Both patients had widespread metastatic disease; clinically asymptomatic soft tissue metastases were found by SUMÁRIOAs metástases a distância em carcinoma diferenciado de tireoide são raras. “…This proportion is only 4-15% in the case of differentiated thyroid cancers (7,8). Common sites of metastasis include the lungs and bones (8)(9)(10)(11), while soft tissue metastasis is reportedly extremely rare (12)(13)(14). Although distant metastasis in patients with thyroid cancer is not as grave as that in other cancers, it significantly affects survival; therefore, a thorough work-up including 18 F-FDG PET/CT is required (9,15,16).…”

“…[7] There are reports of PET/CT in identifying muscle and scalp metastasis from a papillary thyroid cancer. [89] This is the first case of identifying primary papillary cancer with subcutaneous metastasis in PET/CT. Recognizing and understanding the clinical findings may determine the overall management of the patients.…”
